No. 4 Mk 1 - Am I right?

Good day gents,

Just picked up this old 303 off of an old timer. Hoping someone could help with some information and value of the rifle.

It is stamped 1942 with a Y started serial number. The bolt and action serial numbers match. It has the screw micromemter rear site that adjusts to 1300 yards. The front band is stamped VNS and the action is lightly stamped fmr. I can clearly read No_ 4 but can't make out the number after the M. On the other side of the action it is stamped ENGLAND.

Condition is fairly good (no sure on how to grade older firearms), but unfortunetly some one has carved their name in the stock.

Action is amazingly smooth. Have not shot it yet, but do intend to. Rifling looks very sharp and deep.

Yep its a No4Mk1, it looks to be nice and clean, however it appears that someone shortend the barrel about 1.5 inches.:rolleyes:

Other than that, do you know who made it?, what year? etc...

Its also the wrong butt look at the small of the butt, there should be more wood on ythe lower side!
 
just a small add. VNS is Viners Ltd. Sheffield, who made the barrel bands and nosecaps. Leelad got it in one, the bayonet lug section has been removed from the end of the barrel.

I wonder if they shaved some of to lighten it up? Looking at it further I found that the same serial number that is stamped on the bolt and reciever is also stamped on the fore bottom wood. Is that common?

Does any one know which plant it was manufactured in? Any guesses at approxiamate value?

I am on expert, but I would guess $200 max, To restore it you would have to replace the rear stock and the barrel.

With bubba'd wood and barrel, you would have to find a sucker to pay more then $100 for it. Any gunshop from Halifax to Vancouver will have 2 to 10 bubba'd No.4's on consignment for $100 or less.:)
 
The only thing of value to a collector on that POS is the unmolested front wood. The rest of it is bubba'd up trash, not economically fasible to restore it.

I'd look for a sporter with an intact barrelled action and buttstock and do a transplant. Sell off the mongrel to a backwoods deer runner and be done with it - just my $.02 worth...

yup, find another No4 that has not had the metal molested and do a transplant of all the missing parts. Forestock with bands, micrometer rear sight and front sight ears are worth $100 if you have to go out and buy them. Then you'll have 2 enfields a sporter and a full wood
