No.4 Mk.2 Wood on Mk.1?

So I have this old sportered No.4 Mk.1. It has sat for years in my cabinet with little use and I recently got excited about fitting it with full wood again. The barrel has had 1.5" cut off at the tip, but the military front sight is still there and I can live with the snub nose for my purposes. I bought a stock set off the EE with all the metal hardware (barrel bands, sling swivels and screws are repro, with the rest original). It turned out to be a Mk.2 stock and not the Mk.1 I expected. Since there is very little difference between the two (I thought) I carried on and inletted the forestock to fit my Mk.1. That went OK but when I went to test fit the barrel bands I find they are too small to actually fit. Especially the wide front band looks like it is never going to fit around both of the metal caps on the forestock and hand guard. I might be able to make the rear band work with some massaging, but on the front one there is nothing to massage with the metal caps making up tight together behind the front sight and no adjustment possible.

Is there a difference in the hand guards and/or fittings on the Mk.2 compared to a Mk.1 or is there something else I seem to be missing?

Thanks,
Mark

The front bands are slightly different in size. Depends on which factory made them. Some made the stocks slightly different in size also. You should be able to find a larger front band. The middle band can be made to fit with some sanding of the band channel. Should be tight when it goes on. Glue some sandpaper to a popsicle stick. Sand and keep checking for fit.
Problem with reproduction bands is what did they copy ? Canadian bands are known to be smaller compared to savage bands as an example

The difference between Mk.I and II forestocks is at the back end because of the difference in trigger mechanisms.

The bands are slightly different but the originals can be formed to fit with a bit of patience. MkII bands are available from Sarco or they were.

You will also notice the gap between the face of the butt socket and the back of the fore end is quite large as well but doesn't seem to be an issue otherwise.

That's unfortunate. I will have to do some shopping at upcoming gun shows and see if I can find a larger front band. As you say, I think the rear band can be made to work with some tweaking.

That was no issue for me and didn't affect the inletting.

I will check with Sarco just in case the gun shows turn up nothing, thanks.

Problem Rebuilding Lee Enfield’s is they take time getting the correct parts. Which is the biggest reason I try to buy any parts lots I see. My last two #4’s took about an hour to actually put together due to having multiple spare parts. I have everything to put together a Long Branch except an action. Bands are currently setting on the wood so I know they fit and won’t have any problems putting it together.
