No.4 Mk1 What did they do to this thing?

" I would like to point out that SMELLIE, myself, and a whole lot of other people here in Canada regularly shot at ranges up to 1000 yards with open sights, using the Lee Enfield and SMLE rifles.'

No we didn't. We used peep sights. This rifle has had an excellent peep removed and an "open" sight installed. A younger person can use this effectively at hunting distances (about 100 yards or less gets 95% of the big game in the east.)

This a very good truck gun, back up gun for rainy weather gun or a good loaner. I would have preferred it still have the battle sight, but it is what it is.

The picture is a bit small for me to tell, but the rear sight looks like a Williams. If so he can replace the open sight with a ghost ring. They have several styles and apeture sizes. Just Google Williams gunsights. I've got that kind of setup on a sporterized Martini-Henry in .303 and it works very well. Very quick sight acquisition under hunting conditions.

Ah! Thanks Bill! Good eye, it is a wiliams and I do like ghost rings. That far down the barrel will give a very small picture too which is fine as my eyes are pretty good. A ghost ring rear with the existing front would be easier, put 'er in the middle and fire.

And Ganderite, I agree, I really wish the original peep was still there. Oh well.
