I was wondering if there were any loads more suitable for the shorter barrel length of the No. 5 rifle, as I see the Lyman data was compiled using a full lenght SMLE rifle. My thinking was due to the approximate 7 inch difference in barrel length, would using faster powders yield more accuracy? I'm getting low on IMR 3031, so I'll be shopping soon. The supplier I deal with handles the Hodgdon family of products, along with that Finnish stuff Vihta Vuohri (pretty sure I spelled that wrong). I have 150 grain Hornady #3120, but willing to try other weights.

I also notice the No. 5 has quite the muzzle rise and rapport compared to my Bubba'd No.4 with 21 inch barrel with a muzzlebrake.

Basic version of my question: are there any loads taylored specifically to the No.5 rifle?

Thanking you in advance fellow CGN members.

The general rule is that the load and powder that will give the highest velocity in a standard barrel, will also give the best velocity in a shorter barrel.
I would just shoot the #5,with any ammunition I had.

I have a pair of No. 5's I acquired a short while back. One is near mint and as the other was a little 'rough', after a 'clean-up' I mounted a scope on it to help load testing. I'm not aware there was a load developed specifically for the No. 5 and as has been said in previous posts, basically what 'works' in one will work in all.

In both of mine, bullets of 0.312" diameter, such as the 174gr Hornady and 215gr Woodleigh, 'seem' to be a little more accurate. Slugging the barrels has been on my to do list but I haven't got around to it yet.

For powders there are three I like, IMR 3031, IMR 4064, IMR 4320 and even IMR 4350 in some cases.

Nice stock on that bottom one. Where did you get it? I have a bubbad Nº5 that I wouldn't mind restocking.

The bottem one belonged to a shooting buddy of mine that recently passed away. I 'believe' the after market butt stock he put on it was made by Bishop. That rifle was a little rough when I got it but it cleaned up quite nicely. I do have the original as well but I thought I'd leave it as he had it, for now anyway.

The top one belonged to his Dad and is in near mint condition. As an added touch I picked up a bayonet for it.
