I'm just starting to work my way though the this section of the forum on an educational quest.

I'm surprised there isn't a beginners guide stickied to the top.

Something with a list of do's and dont's to help the new guys avoid some of the same mistake that other may have made when researching to purchase thier first 'Black Rifle'

With all the AR variants and options available it's hard to know where to start.

Cro-molly vs cro-molly lined
to handle or not to handle
rail and iron sight options (which work and which don't)

I'm going to keep on reading.

It's hard to find an answer when you don't know what questions to ask.

There are enourmous threads at ar15.com and the ammo oracle which answer these questions in fine detail. I would imagine this is probably why no CGNer has bothered. I don't have the bookmarks on this computer, but I'm sure someone will be able to help you with the links you need.

SO much of it is based on opinion.....

I mean, hey, I HAD to carry an AR-15 when the Queen loaned me one to use at her expense.

Now that I pay for firearms myself, Swiss is the ONLY way to go....

;)

Thanks for the input guys. I'm reading all that I can, trying to find other threads on people looking to build.

As i said before, it's hard to get answers when you don't know the questions to ask.

My biggest thing is just looking for common mistakes first time builders/buyers make, so I can avoid the same pitfalls.

Buy a flatop with collapsable stock in 16" barrel - you cannot go wrong.

That's the way I'm looking thus far.

Seems like the general 'do it all' rifle.

I read the sticky at the top for the price comparisons and it seems like if you shop around there area some good deals to be had.

Are there manufactures to stay away from or are they all the same?

RRA, Bushmaster, Stag, Armalite, etc ...

Is it better to build your own or buy a pre-assembled package?

First of all, ARs are not created equally. Some are better, some are worse. However, for general purpose, many users won't be able to tell. By large, the all work at the range.

I would say buy a complete rifle from Wolverine, Armseast or Questar ( or any brands carried by them from your favourite shops) - these guys all have parts in stock and are armourers. So if things don't work, they could fix their products.

Bushmaster-I guess they are ok , but some of their staking jobs are not that stellar. I haven't had experience with their current production. However, their importer do not fix anything if they go wrong. They will take a trip back to the US.

At the end of the day, any rifle from CGN dealers here are good to go. You won't get screwed if you go with them. Buying used ones from EE take some skill, I do not advise new guys doing that.

I also advise against buying A2. First of all, they are hard to resell. Second, you can put a sight on a flattop - it makes no sense to limit your own options unless you are mind stuck with the "look"

About 4140 vs 4150 CMV, I doubt for regular recreational range users it makes a big deal. You probably will burn your wallet before you push enough rounds in a few short minutes through the barrel to the point where the two makes any differences. However, I do recommend chromelining. It makes cleaning very easy. For rack grade barrel, this mindless talk about difference in accuracy between chromelined and non-chromelined is irrelevant, especially if all you shoot is cheapo ammo.

This is really more of a metal question but:

So should one look for chrome-moly or chrome-moly lined when shopping for an AR??

My shooting style is more of a 'if it goes bang in a good way, then I smile'

I've been checking out the LMT's and RRA's 16" with a flat top.

I'm looking at the Questar page seeing what they have to offer, they are also just up the road. I'm also looking at Wolverine. They helped me out huge before my BB Course just by doing what they do. I also can save some cash on the taxes.

I feel your pain, and wish you luck in deciding which way to go. I just finished this process for the first time, and recently completed a build. I went the route of assembling the lower receiver from a parts kit, then selecting a stock and upper at a later point. Reason being I wanted to understand how the rifle went together. Also, TSE had a shipment come in right at the time I was looking. This saved me laying out a huge whack of cash at one time too.

The advice of sticking to CGN dealers is a good one. I have dealt with TSE, Questar and Arms East and their customer service is excellent. They give good advice and help steer you in the right direction.

The other non technical thing I did was check out the photo's thread to see what things I liked, and did not like. That helped me narrow down my choice as well. There is no end to how you can configure your AR, so take the time to see what looks right for you. Good luck, and hope you get one soon!

Armalite, STAG and LMT are chromelined. RRA -some are, some are not. You need to look at the specific model. Also, preferrably you would like to have a 5.56 chamber instead of a 223.
