Had some trouble getting a stock bolt out of an Enfield No 4- just couldn't seem to find the screw slot, and couldn't get the bit to bite. Finally managed to get the bolt out and this is what I found- somebody had previously broken off a screwdriver tip in the slot!

Made the brilliant discovery a while ago, best way to deal with that stubborn screw is a flat driver bit in a 1/4" ratchet with a long extension.:)

What I do on the real buggers is clamp my huge Craftsman screwdriver pointing up in a bench vice. Then lower the rifle down on to it, and turn the whole rifle.

That has never failed.

But that broken off screwdriver tip in the slot...that's a bugger. You were lucky you got it out.
