No-drill scope-mount for No4 advice.

Here in UK we seem to either get the less than substantial alloy item that looks pretty delicate, to say the least, or the almost $200 device from Fultons of Bisley.

'snot for me, but for a old boy in our club who is not computer literate and needs this advice.

Steel is better than alloy, right? And he has Weaver-style rings.

There must be something in the middle ground there.

I've used the "no drill" S&K mounts for both the No4 and the Model 1917/P14 Enfields for several decades and found them entirely satisfactory. They are compatible with the Weaver style rings. The stock comb on both of these rifles is too low for the use of a scope, but this can be compensated for by the use of a lace on leather cheek piece.
 
In my experience they are a waste of money. If the rifle is already sporterized, Just get it drilled and tapped.
 
I have used the mount from Addley precision. Its alloy but very well made, takes weaver rings. Very solid. Its on my hunting rifle and I have no concerns regarding its strenght. Seems to me it was about 80 bucks
 
I have a couple of Cad-Techniks and I like them because they work as advertised and I can get the bolt out for cleaning, and the iron sights stay on, but I'm not sure they are still available and if I needed another I 'd try the Addley anyway. I had an S&K mount on a sporter I bought and it was well made. I sold it without using it because I didn't need it and I like keeping the iron sights on. Never tried an ATI, I think I hear more people prefer the S&K.
 
The Addley is well made, but it does not have adequate clearance for all the variations of locking bolt thumb pieces. The fishtail shaped thumb piece, for example, would have to be swapped out for an earlier rounded one.

Not sporterised, Sir. Here in UK we just don't see them futzed up like happens in North America - for many reasons. This one is a nice, almost mint, No4 made in Long Branch, like any self-respecting No4 should be.

Anyhow, thanks, Gentlemen for all the advice. Since I'm not paying, just getting, I'll settle on the S&K version and hopefully buy it when I'm over your way in July.

The Fultons of Bisley Picatinny rail mount is as good and nice as they come. The Armalon mount is more of a flatter Weaver shaped base but also really good.

They are both expensive but good. (and made in your country)

Note that both are long and extend forward right up to and over the receiver ring. That is just the ticket for long, big scopes like 30mm high powered target scopes.

The S&K is pretty short in comparison. It really limits you. Otherwise good but limited in size.

The Addley mount is pretty good. He's gone through multiple generations and now has a pretty nice product, I actually bought one.

It's long and has a great profile, solid and secure.

Just search Enfield scope on ebay, hit worldwide and you'll see them.
 
The ATI mount is quite light, and doesnt secure very well at the front.
It should be OK for a light red dot, but I dont see it being stable for a large scope.
