Gentlemen,
This file tells us that SA could have been the only source of Production of the M1 Garand Rifle. Check the date. Read it over and see what Ordnance was up to. Could this be another part of what I call Winchester-Gate ?

The main problem was that there was a much LARGER US Army, USN, USMC and the USAAF.

Not sure what you are saying, Clancy. I own an all original Winchester M1-D that was manufactured in February 1942. It is my understanding that Winchester produced a total of 513,880 M1 rifles between 1941 and 1945.

As the U.S. didn't enter WW2 until 28 months after it started (started Sept 1939 and U.S. became involved in Dec 1941), and the letter you have shown in your posting that was written about 6 weeks after the war started, it occurs to me that a great many things changed from the time of the letter until the time U.S. troops became involved. Clearly the number of troops identified in the letter, and the strategy for producing small arms, changed radically between 1939 and 1945.

Resaw,
I am not saying anything. That letter is saying the the Sec. of War is saying that SA can make the M1 Garands and that they might not need any other company like Winchester to make any M1 Garands. However, we know that Ordnance did need M1 Garand built by Winchester.
Thanks again
