Big sign up at Victoria Fish and Game today - "NO SKS MILITARY AMMUNITION ALLOWED DUE TO FIRE HAZARD". Damn, and I had my VZ-58 and the cheap Czech corrosive stuff along too :(

Someone should make a gadget that files or grinds off the copper jacketing from the tip of the bullet, sort of like a pencil sharpener for ammo.

It would still be a real pain in the ass for a crate of surplus ammo.

BTW, what exactly classifies as 'SKS Military Ammo'? Couldn't you just say 'No Mr. RO, I have no SKS ammo but i do have this economical ammo for my VZ-58!' Why would it create more of a hazard? It's still ammo ain't it?

Sorry got angry, dealt with too many asshats today, the rant is over

That can lead to nasty problems sadly, like old timers cutting the tips off FMJ's to make cheap hunting ammo. What can happen is that in an open base FMJ when the jacket is cut at the front the core can be pushed right through the jacket by the propellant gases leaving the jacket in the bore, then next shot, big pressure spike due to bore obstruction...

Is the Czech/surplus stuff steel cored? I did notice sparks on impact with gravel from surplus 7.62x39, but not sure what to attribute this to. Or are they worried about the primer sparks?

So why is copper jacketed 7.62x39 ammo a fire hazard? I could see it if it's tracer, but not plain FMJ. Shouldn't be any different than any other FMJ.

Pontcanna, better hope for a week or two of rain ;)
Steel cores can make sparks when they hit rocks..which could start a fire, so better to be safe than sorry.
Their sign should have been more accurate though.
Cheers

There were a couple of CGN from BC talking about how they had started fires with the issue ball ammunition and their SKSs. So, I assume it is a possibility.
All standard M43 military spec. ammunition has a mild steel core. Some 7.62x39 hardpoint does not. There should be no more fire risk with this than with any other jacketed bullet. Sample a bullet to see if your ammunition has the steel core.

I've never heard of a grass fire being set with ball ammo. Tracer is another matter entirely - it will start fires quite quickly. The military has to deal with the fire hazard of tracers on a frequent basis when training.

What does corrosive ammo have to do with anything?

Not sure, but the club is inside so I guess the owner must be worried about residue rusting up the benches and possibly the backstop over time ...

Or the mercury in the air. I assume that lead bullets are also banned?

I think there's more to the story than that. Someone(s) probably got pissed off about sks's maybe leaving brass all over the place or taking up space when they want to shoot. Although insurance may have reared its ugly head too. Insurance companies can get pretty stupid. They have to cover themselves very well so they dont have to pay... I just think there's more too it than that. But who knows, it may be like the president of Lakehead University banning wireless networks since it may cause cancer. Talk about a way to make yourself a laughing stock amongst the IT community.

This statement hit the nail on the head.
Your surplus ammo should pose no greater fire hazard than any other ammunition out there (save tracer).
Some old timer in your club is making bogus rules as you go along, because he is a gun snob. It could be the SKS, the brass, the young 'kids', what you wear, blah, blah, blah....
Time to gather your surplus shooting friends and get voted to the board.
You will only change things from within!!

I was there when he put up the sine and it is not just the sks ammo my 7.62-51 port surplus has steel jacket coper wash I cant use it ether asked Al at island outfitters to verify the problem thy have had a fue small fires from the stuff

I must sat that almost every rifle range I have been on for the last 10 years or more is absolutly polluted with fired sks brass. For some reason sks shooters can't be bothered to police their brass.
