America is currently experiencing one of the worst ammo shortages in living memory. You could literally trade someone their kidney for a box of 50-rounds of steel cased 9mm. It’s that ridiculous.

I decided to see if Canada was also experiencing an ammo shortage. On August 5, 2020, I visited two Canadian stores that sell ammo in Brockville, Ontario, Canada. The first was a Canadian Tire, which is basically the Canadian equivalent of Walmart.

The ammo case there stood approximately 12-feet high, and was well stocked. I only saw a few boxes of .223 Remington, but lots of 9mm, .308 Winchester, 7.62x39mm, and plenty of all the hunting ammo you could dream of.

I then headed down the street to a Walmart Supercenter. There, as well, I found a well-stocked ammo case -- albeit smaller than at Canadian Tire. There wasn’t any 9mm, but there were plenty of other calibers.

How is it that Canada doesn't have an ammo shortage? I decided to dig a little deeper by calling one of Canada’s biggest gun stores, Firearms Outlet Canada, located in Ajax, Ontario, to find out if they were experiencing any shortages.

“We’re doing just fine for ammo. Plenty of 9mm and .223 Rem, and all the necessary calibers," a friendly employee named Morgan explained, saying the store had hundreds of thousands of rounds available for Canadian consumers. “Mostly 9mm, but all of the other calibers we are stocked up on as well.”

Morgan said there was a surge of ammo buying in March when COVID-19 hit. Like Americans, Canadians stocked up on ammo, as well as toilet paper. But he said things have leveled out and are relatively calm now up north, with less social upheaval than the U.S. The store does expect an uptick in ammo sales, though, with the coming U.S. presidential election.

“Every time there’s a U.S. election, it boosts sales,” he said.

Lastly, I asked him if there was any way Americans could order ammo from Canada and have it shipped south of the border since the States are seeing a significant shortage of ammo.

“Sadly, no,” Morgan said with a laugh. “We don’t work with any exporters. We simply focus on selling ammunition and firearms to Canadian consumers with valid licensing.”

I can tell you some good news, and that is that Guns.com is constantly working on securing ammo on our site. It doesn't last long but we're working hard to stock it on a regular basis. The best way to make sure you get some is to check our site, or better yet, get on our mailing list and we’ll inform you as ammo is available.

I hear you man but as soon as someone mentions "price gouging" here, there are plenty of CGNers immediately becoming defensive for retailers and tell the guy who's complaining to go #### himself... go figure.

Let them whine, more ammo for the ones who want or need it. :) When there's no access to Ammo they'll whine about that too, and how they should have bought it when they had a chance.

I reload for all of my calibers that I shoot and cast my own which keeps my cost down. prices have gone up a bit but it is still affordable to buy ammo, and when the rounds get shot at the range and the brass gets dropped into the brass bucket I pick out the stuff I need for reloading and go home happy.

Stopped at a site sponsor 's a couple weeks back. Still lots of ammo on the shelves. Still a good supply of "bulk" ammo. Talking with one of the employees I've known for years. His words, " IF we get our next ammo shipment, and right now that's still an IF, because of the states; between higher demand and the Canadian dollar, we'll be looking at 15% minimum, if not a 20% price increase."

so a lot of Americans are stocking up on ammos, are they going to use them? a revolution?

it's like the toilet paper scare, or even groceries,

so in a few months, after the election, there are going to be a glut in the US for all calibres and ammo's going to be so cheap.

Stores always use the Canadian dollar as an excuse.... but the Canadian dollar is back to the same exchange rate as 2019. So not sure why people keep saying price increase because of our weak dollar.

Supply chain is complex. Just because the store has ammo right there on the shelves, it doesn't mean there are plenty of ammo upstream (i.e. warehouses, distributors, etc)

I still think it's going to make landfall here sooner or later. Some of the American forums I keep an eye on speculate this shortage to last 18 months. That's alot of time for canadian shooters to clear out current dealer inventories, then run into problems when they try to restock. This is all pure speculation and I could very well be totally wrong, but I have a hard time believing the US can have such a large ammo shortage with insane price gouging and have Canada just be flush with ammo sold at normal prices the whole time.

5.56 is going for $1 USD/round in some parts of the US, 9mm is climbing to that level as well if you can even find it. Canada will always take a backseat to the US when it comes to anything firearms related and I would expect US manufacturers to concentrate solely in the US market until it levels itself out.
