I went by a friend's place today to check out a one of those passed along rifles that has been sitting in a closet for many years. Its an Ishapore No1 MKIII. I noticed an issue with it right away. The bolt was stuck closed (and cocked). Upon closer inspection, I noticed a gap between the bolt body and bolt head. Someone had actually forced the bolt closed without the head being screwed all the way in. I didnt even know this could be done.

It took quite an amount of effort to remove the bolt. After a turn back in and re-assembly everything seemed to work okay, although I am a little concerned about firing it now. Could this have caused any damage?

I've seen them close befor that way. It's hard to do but it can happen. Do a function test with snap caps or an empty casing. Check the locking lugs for deformation. Ensure the bolt head screws in evenly into the bolt. If that works you should be good.
These are a tough rifle and if that screwed it up there would have been a lot of rifles in the scrap heap.
