No4 Magazine

On your first picture, the numbers were the rifle's serial number. On the last picture, it is the inspector's proof number and my guess is the exact same thing on the middle picture. But one thing is sure, when there is number under the magazine, it was related to the rifle's serial number. It was done to avoid mixing kit all together and/or to be able to yelled at the person who lost his magazine! ;-)

Most times a number on the base is a serial number, but yours is the wrong sequence of ##C#### for a Savage. The square S on the rear rib is for Savage.
 
^^^Agreed. The LEs were intended to be charger loaded through the bridge charger slot. That's why cloth bandoleers had 2 x 5 round chargers per pocket.

Indeed, some WW1 SMLEs had chains linking the mag to the rifle.
