I Just traded for a 1/54 No4 mkII (F). It is apparently in absolute perfect condition, and looks to be so in pics i received. Infact it looks to be almost never used at all. Unfortunately i cant figure out how to get the picture from my hotmail into my photobucket acct... so unfortunately it'll have to wait until i get it in hand to post pics here.

Can somebody fill me in on the history of this gun somewhat and give me an idea of it's value? From what i could find on the internet these ones are pretty good shooters. Also from what i could gather off the web, this one looks pretty similar to examples that were considered to be fresh out of the factory wrapping. Whatever the case, it looks pretty new for a Lee Enfield. Im stoked and cant wait to sling it over the shoulder and take it to the range!

The wartime production Long Branch and Savage rifles are generally acknowledged to be the best quality, (and this is understood to be at least partly because it is easier to keep a factory running properly when you aren't being bombed by the Luftwaffe or having your supply of materials disrupted.) ROF Fazackerly was the last British factory making No.4s (and doing factory refurbishments) and by the 1950s things were much improved from wartime conditions.

Many of them went straight from the production lines to storage as war stocks for decades before being released unused onto the surplus market, and those that were issued weren't in service very long before the FAL replaced them. So there are probably more 1950s ROF (F) rifles in very good condition than from any other factory or period of production.

I have a 1954 Faz No.4Mk2 and the quality is certainly as good as the war time Long Branch rifle I used to have.

I actually tried that first and for whatever reason, it doesn't give me the save as option... But that's how I usually do it also. I tried a few other methods as well but nothing has worked.

Thanks for the other responses, I am really looking forward to taking it for a spin. The only thing I'm not 100% sold on yet is the beechwood stock. I'm a huge fan of walnut, but I can see it growing on me.

If it looks nearly new, it probably is. These rifles shoot very well, and are made from excellent quality materials. I'm sure you'll be amazed at what an un-abused, non-FTR'd 303 in excellent condition can do. Just make sure whoever cleaned it got all of the cosmoline out of the thing - in the wrap they were like a gone wrong candle, you couldn't even tell they were rifles.

Can somebody tell me what the correct bayonet would be for this and how much they go for-ish? It has the original sling on it, just needs the poker.

They can be found with the tent peg style, No7 or no9 bayonets.

Any of the above would be correct under different conditions.

The new ones sold surplus from the war reserves were issued with the No. 9 bayonets; knife blade with the socket. The bayonets were in the same condition as the rifles.

Yep, get a No.9 bladed bayonet. Forget the "pig sticker/tent peg", I'm sure the tent peg was as efficient if not more-so than the No.9 but not half as "scary". :p

I tend to agree... I can just see the look on my wifes face now when i come walking through the door with this thing! lol.

I don't know... I think she's a beaut-e-full rifle! The Buttplate looked like the Zamac one to me, but the seller assured me it's brass, in which case it sure is shiney and un-tarnished.

Here's mine, came with a matching bayo too. Pretty mean little pigsticker too, would have hated to have ever been on the other end of a mad Cdn soldier with it on. Just like yours, I put an identical sling on mine. Has the same rust marks too!

No idea what it's worth because I am not selling it. Got advice for some cast bullets on the CGN and that is the next project.

Very very nice exemple you have:) here's mine, bought from S.I.R maybe 12 years ago for $199 with the matching MK9 boyonet. Rifle made 11/54, show little use, bore is like new. The wood is quite dark, most i have seen are much like your. I need a oiler and a sling to complete. Didnt fire it yet, almost forgot i have her:p

On the sling, there are the darker (I called rust marks) markings where the previous owner had set the sling loops. I bought a genuine sling for mine, and it had those markings too.

There is absolutely no rust on my bayo or rifle. It is a beautiful rifle.

One thing - please turn the sling round so that the metal plates (whatever you call them) are on the inside. That will prevent the metal parts from digging into your stock if they get knocked against the stock.

I don't believe Canadians were ever issued the Mk2. a certain amount of this production run was slated for the Irish Republic....before the IRA kicked up its heels, these are now commonly referred to as the "Irish Contract" rifles. The British government rescinded this contract for fear of potentially arming a terrorist organization......lucky them, lucky us!:D
