Found these on gunboards
I have not often seen No4Mk1/2 or No4Mk1/3 BSA FTR rifles.
Especially in this condition

They are usually ROF FTR

Thought I'd also mention, on the BSA conversion of a Savage, the "US Property" mark was milled off:

However, on a Fazakerly conversion I have of a Savage, it was left on:

Interesting. One was a Maltby and the other a Longbranch. Faz didn't bother scrubbing markings, they just EP'd next to them. The LB is obviously scrubbed though - notice the "melted" look to the line across the top of the receiver sidewall. It wasn't a Savage as there's no evidence of the US Property marking having been removed and the receiver bridge charger guides are characteristically Longbranch IMHO.

Given condition and the 1956 date, these were obviously placed in war reserve and not re-issued. Possibly done for a cadet order that was never delivered considering that by 1956 most refurb work on No.4 rifles had halted as the SLR was coming on-line as of 1954 or so.

They may be someone's homedone resto's too. I'll never forget seeing an Arisaka in perfect, flawless 100% A+ condition that some bubba had applied his skills to. It was nice, but from a collector standpoint, made me cringe.

Oh, I think they're legit. I see ones just like them fairly often. BSA's are less common than Faz /2 and /3 converions, but they're not rare by any means.

Look again my friend. The vestigil "front pad" shelf is the give-away that this was a Savage.

Long Branches don't have the little "hook" at the bottom rear of the inlet.

Also LBs & Savages tend to have very distinct serials & being as the legal ownership of Savages was in doubt, there is a reason for the gun to "lose" it's "illegible" serial #. Also no reason to "melt" a LB top shelf.
