no4mk1 loose stock?

I just changed the wood on a no4mk1 and can't seem to get the buttstock tight. Screw snugs up, but stock moves side to when pressure is applied. Ideas? Washers?

I changed out a buttstock and ran into the same problem. It turned out that the lockwasher for the stock bolt was stuck inside the old stock. It tightened up just fine after I put it in.

You need some washers that fit the hole and the bolt shaft. Question? Does the bolt have the spring washer and is the butt all the way into the socket?

I don't remember any washers, spring or otherwise. It is in all the way though.

check the old buttstock. shine a light in and see if you can find the lock washer.

+1 to the washer. I picked up an old sported enfield with a loose butt stock. Tossed a washer in there, and it tightened up very well.

Yep. Tossed a washer I happened to have (lucky, perfect fit!) and she tightened up perfect.

I stick my long screwdriver into the hole with the stock bolt out and tap...if it sounds metallic, the spring washer is usually in there.

The proper washer is o.d. 0.780", i.d. 0.470", 90 thou thickness. Somebody could turn them up on the lathe.

On a related note, the butt from a Long Branch No.4 won't fit a Brit or Savage rifle without modification. A Brit No.4 butt can be used on a SMLE if you cut a small recess for the safety lever.
