I've looked through Skennertons and Strattons books but can't find a reference as to wether or not all No5 rifles had M47/C stamped on the left side of the butt socket. Three of the rifles are marked only No.5Mk1 with electropencil on the left flat and two are marked, again electropenciled on the left flat, No5Mk1ROF(F), the serial on both of these rifles has been "X"ed
3/45 ###XX (but no M47/C mark or stamp anywhere)
over and a new number, in different prefix letter and number ranges has on one been electropenciled on the left buttsocket and on the other stamped. Everything else is correct though. Any opinions or better yet knowledge would be much appreciated.:) bearhunter

IIRC M47/C is BSA (Shirley), and I know ROF(F) is Royal Ordnance Factory Fazakerly (sp). I also know both made No5's. You shouldn't expect to find both markings on one rifle.

Only BSA and ROF(F) made the No5, so you should find one or the other on a No5 but as Stevo said, not both on the same rifle. BSA had three factories in Birmingham, which is why there is the "/C" to tell you it was the factory at Shirley. I'm not sure if they made No5s at either of the other BSA factories.
