Greetings,

Hoping to bring a No5 into the stable sometime soon, but the one I've been ogling has a bit of an ass-kicked "recoil pad". Anybody replaced one of these with something contemporary? A trimmed hockey puck, perhaps?

Seriously... looking for suggestions, and / or advice from those that have gone before me down this road!

Thanks in advance,

Neal

No5 Pad

I have bought pads from Numrich in the past and they were only $5.00 or something like that. The original pads turn hard as a rock, after a few years because of the type of rubber used. The original pads will self-destruct if solvents come in contact with them.

Is this going to be for a collection, or a regular shooter?

Keep an original pad around to put back on her if you switch her to being a safe queen/collectible.

But If you are going to use this rifle all the time, I'd put a modern uber thick butt pad on her...as them #5's have ugly recoil. :D

The recoil isn't ugly... Just rather "stout"(!).

:)

Actually, the first time I fired a No5 (Thanks, Six Star!), it took me awhile to figure out why every time I squeezed the trigger, my baseball cap was ending up rotated halfway over my head. Eventually, I realized that the butt on Six Star's rifle was a "normal" length, and I use a "long" on my No4's... I was just close enough to the raised rear sight that every time I touched off a round, the sight was hitting the brim of my cap.

That said, I did manage about 20 rounds through her, in addition to the 50 through my No4, before I started to regret having a shoulder at all! I guess the advantage of firing .303 with metal buttplates for a few years is that you end up killing off a few nervous receptors in the right shoulder? Nowadays, I tend not to really feel it until the day after!

Maybe I could get permanent disability, be unable to work, and get to spend even more time on the range?

I must have thick hide (or skull) or something, I don't find my #5 bothersome till I start fireing prone, off hand I like her alot! Had her out yesterday with a friend, he did comment it was brisk, and went back to my m1 carbine:D

life is good!

No 5 Carbines

If you are a small guy the No 5 doesn't bother you too much it just pushes you around. But if you are big guy the seem to try try to go through your shoulder. I was OK shooting some of mine until I packed on the weight and then they started to hurt. I have 4 No5's on the rack and I can't shoot them because of a spinal injury, they leave me unable to walk after absobing the recoil. The worst position to shoot them is prone.
