Noise level with different barrel lengths and maybe a fake cans?????

Just wondering what your guys thoughts are on different length barrels + and - fake cans?
My 21" bolt action savage is super quite. I find my cooey is abit louder. The 16" 10/22 being semi is louder still. I had a Dlask 8" barrel and I found it so loud I liked to double up ear protection. My friends SKSs and AR-15 were less loud than the 8" barrel.
Anyway Im getting a 10" barrel made for my 15-22.
I cant wait to shoot it. Just wondering if a fake can would help at all?
I did have a forward comp on my 8" and I found it helped abit. However it was over 1/2 pound and added too much weight out front for me. Yes I know some people like the added weight.
I really wish we could have suppressors here.
Ear protection is underrated here!

It makes sense that the longer the barrel, the less noisy it'll be. If the gasses are still expanding (powder still burning) in a short barrel, you'll get a tremendous crack from the pressure being released as the projectile clears the crown. On the other hand, I would imagine a barrel that is a couple hundred metres long (the bullet would never exit), probably wouldn't be noisy at all.

The fake can on a short barrel might help a bit - it even though it's not absorbing the pressure into itself, it should project the noise forward.

Suppressors would be a great health-and-safety thing, for sure.
 
My thought was the longer the distance from where the gasses come out the gun, the less precived noise.Using a fake can would the noise be different? I know with it being semi auto, Im always going to get more noise than a bolt action and yes I just bought subsonics to help with noise.
 
I've wondered that same question. I have a 10" bbl on this 10/22, and a fake can that is around 9" long. Next time I'm out shooting, I'll try it with & without. Really curious how my Savage TR will be with the can & subsonic ammo.

The BTVS with subsonic, is like shooting 22 BB caps.
Nice gun btw. Abit heavy for my taste but looks like a fun trainer. Love the .223 scope on the 22

However I did say perceived noise level. I know that the noise level was lower with a forward comp. The noise technically wasn't less, it was redirected.
 
Not advice at all... (GET THE BUCKET!!!)I know for a fact (HURRY) that legislature regarding firearms (huhhh huhhh HURRY! IT'S COMING!) in our fair nation are based on (uggghhhhhh -splashing sounds-uggghhhhh) logic, and common sense. People who (uggghhhhhh -splashing sounds-uggghhhhh) own firearms (followed by a few minutes of dry heaves) are naturally (uggghhhhhh -splashing sounds-uggghhhhh) criminals bent on (uggghhhhhh -splashing sounds-uggghhhhh) killing other citizens(a few more minutes of dry heaves), and require such legislature at all.
 
I'm sure the fake can would take the noise ___ number of inches further away from your ears so yes...likely less perceived noise. As for reducing the actual report~I don't think it does much. I'm at odds like you are though... I'm drawn to shorter barrels, but dislike the increased noise that comes with it. My 13" Backpacker~I only use CCI Quiet-22 or CB longs with it~and it still makes a good "crack". When I had my big old Cooey 75, the same rounds through that rifle were nearly silent. The sound of the bullet hitting a soup can was louder than the report of the gun to begin with.

I'm toying with the idea of one of those AGW "Linear" brakes for my Savage FV-SR, but admittedly...it has more to do with aesthetics. I don't find the report all that bad, but I'm using standard velocity (sub-sonic) in that rifle anyway.
 
It will be interesting having a 10" barrel and putting a small 6" can on it.
I know it will be louder than the 16" factory barrel, but how much difference from an 8" barrel will be interesting also.
Most people in the US that cut their barrels down, use suppressors with them.
Sadly we don't have that option.
Funny thing is other countries, it's a requirement
 
I agree that it is completely avoidable that shooters must subject themselves to noise levels deemed illegal in a work environment. Suppressors can bring noise levels to safe levels and many countries not only recognize the benefits but mandate it BECAUSE it is a safety issue.

As for fake cans- I completely misunderstood the OPs question and was expecting something else....
 
I've noticed a difference with an AR half birdcage type flash suppressor directing the noise more forward and making it easier on my ears. If you are shooting from a standing position it helps to have the vented portion on the bottom.

Generally, the .22 rimfire cartridge reaches it's maximum velocity within 16 inches of barrel length. Shorter than this, there is still a bit of unburned powder that will give a bigger muzzle flash, and more noise.

A fake suppressor could lengthen your barrel length out a bit so that the noise would be directed forward within the larger expansion area of the suppressor. When I first started hunting Gophers I was using a Savage BTVSS and my partner was using a Ruger 10-22. The Farmer whose land we were on remarked that he could tell which one of was shooting by the difference in the sound of the rounds being fired.
