Non corrosive ammo recommendation for SKS - now that Barnaul is out?

That's an AK, likely a custom build.

I've only seen a very few SKS rifles that will shoot under three inches at 100yds with any factory ammo and they were both Yugos.

I will fully admit there are one offs out there that will and you might have one, but they're few and far between.

My Yugo, now sold, used to like "Fusion 123gr FMJ'' and Winchester 120gr Split HP best when it came to factory non corrosive fodder and shot them just over 2moa, off the bench, if I did my part right.

I tried many diffrent kinds of ammo on my SKS. I started with Chinese, Romanian, Hungarian and Chech milsurp and for me Chech stuff worked the best. I was consistently hitting 2" - 2.5" groups on 100m. That's definitely not bad for SKS. I decided to spend a bit more $$$ and try out better loads. 124gr Sellier & Bellot came ahead of PPU, Barnaul and PMC. Groups with S&B were tighter and accuracy improved quite a bit although the box of that ammo sells right now for $23....I decided to only use it with my CZ 527.

I'm saving my Barnaul for "Special Occasions", I've got a stash that only cost $15/bx. (ca 0.86/rnd) I've got Chinese Mil for $ 0.40/rnd and know how to clean it off. $23/bx + tax = $26+ = $ 1.32/rnd. = 3X my Chicom.
My SKS is only 6-8 MOA at 100, lots better at 50 - just with OEM irons.

At that price for steel cased ammo I'd rather go with the brass cased RUAG which is 85 cents including taxes and shipping for me.

Yep, that Case price makes it worth buying. The $23+ price per box is likely a bit less if bought by the case. My Chicom pricing was for case lots @ 0.40 incl tax & shpg.

I’ve shot ppu, mfs, hornady sst’s and norc white box for non corrosive out of sks’s and they all shot in the 3.25” range at 100y consistently, for plinking I’ll use norc white box and if I was hunting I’d pick the ppu. For volume I’ll shoot surplus.

Barnaul shoots lights out for me. Saving a couple of bricks for a rainy day. PPU has been pretty solid too. I'll probably just shoot the Norinco non-corrosive.

Barnaul is good because it has small tolerances. When you go to youtube and look at the variances of different ammo, measured in ft/s and deviation there off. I will eventually do some measurements myself with different ammo.

That's why POI (point of impact) is different with different ammo but also within the same ammo.

Norinco white box grew orange fuzz in my SKS

after 2 days ( my fault, I should have cleaned it sooner but didn’t due to the “non-corrosive” label ).
Norinco redbox provides good accuracy in both SKS and CZ. Barnaul proved to be the most accurate of any I’ve tried. It gave me five rounds in one ragged hole at 50 yards off the bench in my scoped CZ. Ruag proved to be the least accurate of the bunch so far, 2 inches plus at fifty with the CZ. Nice, clean, boxer brass though.

not surprised by your ruag test: the factory where they re produced was not known for being the best in the past: putting the ruag name doesnt change what it is ...

I bought the RUAG stuff but haven't shot it yet. Reason is because I want to reload but I am not expecting anything to beat the Barnaul stuff.

6-8 MOA is bad. Shim the action, sand out the inside of stock so barrel does not contact, and shoot with the bayonet out.
Should tighten up unless something is seriously wrong with the barrel.

3 to 4 inch groups is the standard, better with Barnaul or reloads. But Barnaul is gonne and was overpriced towards the end for steel cased. 123 grain bullets are cheap. Reloading for that cartridge is easy. I found reloading for .223 a PITA because of the comparable tall but not very wide casings. 30 caliber is much better, would be nice if they also used .308 bullets but it is doable.

6 to 8 inch is not very good. What SKS is it? Chinese or Russian?

Some people can’t shoot irons to their full potential… most SKS i have shot can obtain 3MOA with surplus. When shot slowly. I see some people complaining about their rifles accuracy and they are using a block of wood for a bench rest and slamming on the trigger…
