on mayne island in the gulf islands off the coast of bc it seems that a few years ago someone decided falow deer would make a great pet, problem is for whatever reason they are now a huge free roaming population. the question i have for anybody who knows is whether or not you are allowed to hunt them without a license? on mayne island it is illegal to shoot a firearm but my dad was thinking a crossbow would work perfectly fine. on the island it does say no hunting on a sign as you leave the ferry terminal but my dad`s thought was that it wasnt technically hunting if it isnt an idigenous species.

Fallow deer are considered 'game' here in BC and there are licences and seasons. You will need a Gulf Islands licence, a hunting licence, a blacktail/mule deer species tag AND confirmation that hunting is allowed on that particular island. The Islands Trust people and private landowners have done a fine job of reducing opportunities.....
Upside is, the season for fallow deer is usually end of February and they are super tasty.

HUNTING is not permitted on the island nor is the discharge of firearms. So the garden-fed deer are almost tame and sheep may safely graze.

Sidney spit became a National Park. The Indians layed claim to their tradition hunting rights and the rest of the Island is private.
You won't find it in the synopsis, but fallow deer are in the full regs (wildlife act). Given they are a naturalized exotic that lives almost entirely on private land there is little reason for them to be a managed species, but such is things.
Yes with the use of burning Cedar boughs as per their traditional heritage they are allowed to pit lamp.
As for Maine Island the locals are slowly figuring it out that the deer population is at a high point.
Will they allow hunters to assist in the eradication of those pests...time will tell.
As for using a crossbow, it would work.
The definition of hunting as defined in the hunting regs is where the plan is flawed.

in ontario non indigenous animals are kill on sight most of the time i kill more carp,gobys,other invasive fish,sparrows,starlings,rats then anything all get turned into compost
