It's actually a home defense question.

Can I buy 12 gauge non-lethal ammo (Bean bags, rubber ring rounds etc.) If so if I shoot an intruder in the proper way (I had the formation in the CF) then call the police am I gonna have more issues than the criminal?

First, it is LESS lethal, not non-lethal. Second, the police and courts will still treat it as an application of deadly force, regardless of the ammo you chose. I am not sure if the ammo is available in Canada or not.

Personally, if I have to shoot someone, I will be using the real deal for ammo, because the situation will be desperate and lethal force will be justified. At that point, stopping the attacker will be all I worry about and if he dies in the process, too bad for him.

Rubber buck-shot, slugs and bean bag rounds are available as 'wildlife deterrents'. I believe to get them you have to sign an end user form. They are not cheap either. Anywhere from $4 to $10 per round.

As posted above I think its a bad idea for home defense.

Basically by having less lethal rounds ready to rock and roll you would be showing the courts that you bought those rounds for "less lethal applications" and not for legit hunting or sporting purposes. It's sad that you can't have any sort of firearm, weapon, knife, pencil or anything for dedicated "self defence" purposes. Camo deer gun with slugs, or a stock 870 with birdshot is a lot less inconspicous then a tacti-cool rig with flashlights and lasers and a grappling hook and all that other tactical gear. Any time you're considering you would ever have something you would ever be in a position to use to defend your family, home or possessions, you need every opportunity of denial and defense you can grab.

Home defense is not a legit excuse for possessing firearms in Canada (long live the left wing agenda!)... in other words, if you shoot someone with a firearm equipped with "less lethal" projectiles, you just make it very clear WHY you have that particular gun: self-defense... and this would be a big no-no in our Leftist LaLa Land! (where the victim's only right is to die or suffer in pure indignity at the hands of legally empowered criminals)

Also, you may want to remember that the intruder may not have come to pay you a visit without his own means of harming you. So, while you're pissing him off with your bean bags or rubber pellets, he just might pull out a stolen .45 and blow your brains out with the first shot.

Still interested in the "less-lethal" option?

We should all cease with the "politically correct rhetoric."

I have undergone much training over the years. There is only one method of "stopping the attacker" that is recommended, and that is of course to "kill the attacker DEAD."

Whenever there is justification for the application of "lethal force" the force applied must be "lethal."

There is no Hollywood props or scenario. There is no shooting the knife or gun out of his hand. There is no shooting him in the leg and having him limp away. In the event where I would be faced with applying deadly force, rest assured I would shoot the attacker dead. You may not get a second shot if you only shoot him in the arm and piss him off.

To address the question of bean bag ammo, forget it. Use of 7 1/2 or #6 shot will kill most living things that would want to hurt you. You also don't have to worry about over penetration and injuring you next door neighbor while he sleeps in his bed.

We must not ascepticise self defence, it is brutal and barbaric in nature and is not for the timid or soft of heart.

If I ever get to the point where I actually have a loaded gun pointed at someone, it will be because I am convinced I need to use lethal force or I (or someone else) will be killed. I will not want, at that point, anything non-lethal in the gun.

rubber 12 ga slugs cost the company that I work for $4.00 a round.
The slugs will go through 5/8" plywood at 15 yds range. I wouldn't want to get hit with one any closer than 50 yds away. (actually, I'll pass on getting hit with one at any range, thank you)

If you're looking for non-lethal, definitely do not check out this website

Hahahaha! I think the sound of my corking 870 can also be a good persuasion. But yeah a Rottweiler is a good option. And they beautiful too... :p

Dogs and guns are the two things that criminals fear the most. The problem is that having a large dog doesn't fit into many people's lifestyle, myself included.

The only problem with that is; by the time it comes to you having to rack your 870, you already have angry bad guys in your house. It is too late to rely on any deterrent. You had better be fully prepared to use lethal force... otherwise your freshly cocked and loaded 870 may very well get used against you rather than by you. And "less lethal" ammo won't do you much good if your attackers are armed and/or determined... or just whacked out of their minds on crystal meth...
