Looking at getting another barrel for a savage precision rifle project. What are some non magnum long action calibers that are accurate on paper and might be used for the occasional deer or varmint. 6.5x55, .280 rem, 3006? Any experience would be appreciated. (I will be hand loading so expense of factory dosent really matter)

Your in Ontario so you have to watch for caliber restrictions while varmint hunting (small game = 275 cal or under). When I made the same decision I went with the 270 for the versatility, 90gr varmint bullets up to 180gr Woodleighs. Factory ammo is available everywhere.

6.5x55 is also an excellent choice.

a 6.5x55 is a great choice as is a 280. Avoid the 30-06 because it lacks the high ballistic coefficient of the 6.5mm and 7mm unless you use a 210 grain vld. both are also a great choice for most game from deer to moose

How about .284 Winchester, the heavier bullets would work much nicer in a long action than a short action. But 6.5x55 would be perfect if you have hunting regs that would exclude the 284.

If you live above French River then any caliber will do just fine. Something like 300WSM, 284 Win, 260AI.
If you live below French River, then search the caliber under .270. Something like 6.5x284, 260, 6BR (best for varmint due to accuracy).

That restriction only exists in certain areas in southern ON. The exact areas are covered in the hunting regulations summary on p.79. The rest of the province is good to go with any rifle, as allowed by local discharge restrictions, etc.

I also considered the 280 AI. I am leaning towards the 6.5x55 as I am most familiar with it. I have heard 284 win is a real barrel burner? Hmmmm, decisions decisions....
Thanks for the replies do far.

I just went 6.5 x55 custom build out at the range today shooting against a 300 mag
I had no drift at 800 he had 1 foot and have half the drop and the same energy
out to 1000 he gave up speed for accuracy so I think I might be a little more energy than a 300 at 1000

I went through the same dilemma, I was torn between 280 AI and 284 Win. I am choosing 284 Win because of brass and because of not needing to fire form brass.

I've been wanted to have a 6.5x55 built. As I understand it, the american brass makers use 30-06 brass so that the head is .473". Does anyone know if the Lapua brass is .473, or is it the .480 that the 6.5x55 is supposed to be? I'm using an older Rem 700 long action. I measured the bolt face and it's .480, so there wouldn't be enough room for the 6.5x55 brass that is "made to spec".
