Non-refurb SKS value

I have a non-refurbished 1951 Tula hardwood SKS. Everything is original on it as-issued and everything is stamped with a matching serial number and no refurb stamps on it. The stock isn't in mint condition. You can see it's been to battle.

I know refurbished SKS' are going from $250-$300 in Canada right now and I'm just wondering what the value is on this gun? Is it worth a lot more because it's an as-issued gun? Is it worth less because it's seen a lot of use?

Doesn't look like battle wear. Somebody's truck gun? I would expect the electropencil on the bottom of the gas tube to show corrosion from being exposed to the elements. At least that is how it has been on the few battle worn ones I've seen.

Maybe not used in battle per say but it's definitely from them using it or storing it overseas. I'm the first owner of the gun over here when it came out of the crate. I cleaned off all the cosmoline myself.

I'm looking for an approximate value of this firearm.

I can buy another one that's very similar and I just want to know if it's worth it. If I sold it today, what could I get for it?

Thank you for your imput

I'm a little out of touch with the market as I've been screaming busy at work but a recent scan of the EE is showing values up around the $350-400 mark and list prices a little higher for unrefurbished "hand select". I've been approached by a few people while waiting for my pal renewal offering good-vg unrefurb for $300 and they've apparently sold in minutes of posting. YMMV.

A well used SKS with a horribly altered magazine? $250 tops?

This is the flip side of that coin for sure. Your mag was absolutely butchered, but I'd pay a bit more if I were buying it still in cosmoline, but as it sits right now it kinda looks like you rode her hard and put her away wet.

Unfortunately that's how she came out of the crate. I JUST cleaned off all the cosmoline this morning and a lot of those pics were taken the other day when it was still covered in it.

And the desirability of every one of them was reduced. Yours is worse than most. Looks as if the block came loose and someone rewelded it.
Given a choice of two similar rifles, one with a neat internal alteration, and one with a messy external weld, which would you choose?

I just picked up an all matching unrefurbished letter series with a nicely riveted mag for $270. Not that rare to find all numbers original matching SKS.

I think you'd be doing very well to get $250 for it.

I'm no authority on SKSs having only owned 1...and having only shot maybe 2 others. I paid $259 after tax for mine from a CGN sponsor and it's a nice, clean, 1954 re-furb. Never even looked to see if the #s were even matching on mine to be 100% honest, but my mag has the steel rod welded on the bottom of the follower. (=WAY WAY cleaner than the hack job done to yours) I feel like I paid maybe $25 too much for mine, but bought it with no regrets. I'd still rather own mine than yours, based on the photos/details.

So...long/rambling story short~your rifle would maybe we worth $225-$250 tops to an SKS "newbie" like me. I'm confident every other person who has chimed-in probably knows more about the value than I do...but I browse the EE about twice a month looking for another SKS that might catch my eye.

That's where our opinions differ. You're just looking for an SKS that looks nice and does what it's suppose to do, so a refurbished one with a shiny stock and some new parts works for you. (I have a refurb that I use for shooting and playing around with too) I like the history part of the gun. I like knowing that this gun has all its original parts and everything is stamped with the serial number. It's been through a lot and has the scars to prove it. To me, that means more than just a brand new gun. To each their own I guess.

Would I rather have the mag look nicer? Sure, I'd love an original mag pinned from the inside, but an original mag beat up (to me) is better than a refurbished one.
