Non-Reloadable Brass

You cannot say that 7.62x54 is typically not reloadable on its own.

Generally yes but that is because it is either steel case, berdan or both.

Sooo..
In short the only ones you cannot reload are steel and berdan.

(note you can actually reload berdan but it is not worth the effort.)

I've also heard that nickel-plated casings tend to separate from the brass inner layer.

Personally, I've never had that happen to me. I use a lot of nickel brass for pistol and some for rifle. There are claims of necks splitting sooner, primer pockets being tighter, etc. To me, it's the same as any other brass.

Only shinier.:D

I've reloaded nickle for rifle for my .300 WM, the only differance I've noticed is it takes a bit more of a grunt to resize and likes the LUBE.

Ok. I know this would be a ton of work......but......has anyone ever drilled a new flash hole in a berdan style case and put a regular large rifle primer in it just to see if it works?? You'd have to make up a bit of a jig on a drill press to keep everything centered, but I'm wondering about the size of that primer hole. Is it the same as a regular large rifle primer?

Plus one for the nickel lasting just as long. I've got one....yes, count it....ONE nickel case that I threw into the rotation. I'm starting to get very thin necks on some of my 300WM brass, but that isn't one of them. I thrown a few away. No problems so far with the nickel....been fired 9 times by me, and who knows how many times by the previous owner.

IIRC the Berdan primers use a different size (diameter and depth) primer pocket.

I suppose you could do about anything, if you had to, but that sort of work fall well beyond the level I feel that I have to, when I can buy decent reloadable brass for just about anything out there.

Cheers

I've drilled out berdan brass. Regular boxer primers mostly tend to fall out since the pocket diameter is larger than boxer brass. Not worth the effort.

Just read an article on reloading steel cased pistol rounds........do-able but not worth my time

I found a few steel .40S&W cases at the range the other day, noticed they were boxer primed, so I decided to reload them out of sheer curiosity. I had to lube'em but apart from that, they weren't any more difficult to reload.

when you put a boxer style primer pin through a berdan case, you remove the avil, which is integral with the case - on other words, there's no support for the primer- i got some 8 mm years ago by norma, and a lot of the european stuff is berdan primed-
i used to do berdan by running it through the old lee loader( the one with the hammer) to neck size, then filling the case up to the neck with water, and using the priming tool rod like a piston- it does force the primer out, but that's all it does
