Hi, I am interested in getting a black rifle. My first choise would be the robinson xcr rifle . The problem is when are the ever going to be made and delivered plus what about reliability. So what are other options that a person can get for a non restricted black rifle? What are the price ranges?

I know that the ruger mini 14 can be considered a black rifle. It also has propably the lowest price range but accuracy can be a problem. What ever happened to the factory folding stock option? AI assume they are discontinued but could a factory folder be found still?
Also the norinco m305 [aka m-14] could fit into this catagoury also.

My choice in a calibre would be 5.56 nato

Swiss Arms Black Special, Classic green... series ~3000$
Armalite 180B, 1000$ range.
Robinson Arms Expeditionary M96
SigArms new model 556.

M305 is considered a Battle rifle, but very cool none the less, however it's 7.62 cal (.308)

I had a mini-14 with a Buttler Creek folder, was very blackish.
180B with new railed handguard options make it an interesting choice.

You could also buy a Beretta CX4 Storm have it rebarreled by Epps to 18 1/2"-19" and reclassified as non-restricted. Great thing about this is that it takes pistol mags so you legally shoot 10 rounders.:D Controls are reversible as well. About $1500 including rebarreling

I'd wait for the XCR to make its debut - who knows it may turn out to be a rhineland arms r22!

Without starting a big discussion on the whys and hows, I would not hold your breath on the SIGARMS 556.

You can still find a factory folding wood Mini 14 stock but it won't be easy. Two months ago I called and emailed just about every firearms dealer in Canada and found one. P&D I believe had a new factory folder in the original box just sitting there. They've been discontinued since the early 80's I think but were still available to whoever wanted to order a replacement if they had the correct serial numbers on their gun. Last I heard that even stopped just under ten years ago. So when I was offered this brand new stock for $275 you better believe I jumped on it.

Then came the dilema of finding a correct gun. Not knowing better I jumped on the first good deal Mini 14 I saw on the board. It was a fantastic gun in awesome condition but it didn't fit the stock. Only certain runs did. From what I know it's serial numbers ranging from 181 to 184 or 186. I eventually found a 184 in like new condition from a great guy on this board and it works perfectly. My buddy has an original setup from the seventies and it's a number 183.

Now your best bet is Ebay to find a factory folder but you'll be looking at $400 US and up. A fellow had one on here not long ago for $800. Another guy was selling a stainless Mini and the stock for $1200, about what they're worth.

If you can find one, though, they're as black rifle looking as anything else. You feel like you're in some guerilla camp in Peru doing illegal stuff when you're playing with it, what my younger brother actually told me. Turns heads everywhere. People are shocked to find out it's a Mini 14! And the best part is they're rare, not too many floating around, almost a piece of history! Now if only my buddy will sell me is SS one and I'd have a matching pair...

I sold my mini-14 a while ago

Upgraded to a HK SL-8, couldn't be happier!

I just had some work done on it as well, had the barrel cut back and a Vortec flash hider put on.

Does it help?

I odn't get that large top arm on the SL-8. I too am considering getting one but that damn thing looks so wierd. Can you take it of and put a proper rail up there for a scope??

Yes. The SL8-4 comes with a scope rail. I think it's the -5 that comes with the 'iron' site. Even so, the 'iron' has cuts for a weaver or pic scope mount. It will look funny sticking out, but an optic will work fine.
