Hello I wanted to give you a brief introduction before I get into my question(s).

I am in my mid 40s and I did briefly serve in Canada's Reserve Armed Forces back in the early 1980s. I was issued the FNC2 (fully automatic version of the standard issue semi-automatic FNC1). So I have had some exposure to weapons, but I really have not done much with them since then. I am contemplating getting my PAL (maybe even a RPAL) and then obtaining a semi-automatic 7.62 caliber military surplus style black rifle. I have never been convicted of a crime, I have no history of mental health issues and no history of drug or alcohol abuse. Not sure if the Feds check the military for past service history, but as long as I do the required training and pass the exams I can't see why I would be rejected though ... LOL ... I have been known to flame the Federal LIEBeral Party of Canada on many occasions in online forums.

Anyway ... assuming I can obtain a PAL, I was leaning towards staying with the "non-restricted" category. I know I have less options open to me, but the "restricted" category just seems to be a hassle. If Bill C68 gets royal assent then I will never need to worry about registering a "non-restricted" weapon with the useless gun registry? In fact do the Feds even require "non-restricted" long guns to be registered now? or is this talk of a long-run amnesty just talk? Is the main difference between a PAL and a RPAL that "restricted" weapons can only be used at gun clubs? meaning "restricted" weapons can not be legally used on crown land? Will "restricted" black rifles still need to be registered even if C68 goes through?

I am still in the early stages. I will likely talk to the folks at Calgary's "Shooting Edge" for my training since I work not all that far from them. From a "non-restricted" semi-automatic black rifle point of view I am looking into the "CZ 858", the "M14" or "SKS" as possible weapons, but does anyone have any other "non-restricted" semi-automatic black rifles they could recommend and should I think twice about not looking into "restricted" semi-automatic black rifles?

Finally I hope I don't get one of these:

LOL

I already had a .22cal. semi-auto rifle which I had to register but my first purchase was a used High Standard .22cal. handgun ( restricted of course ) I then decided, after a few months that I wanted a centerfire rifle so I got a Ruger Mini14. A while later I purchased a Norinco M4. Now to get my hands on a nice 9mm handgun. Guns are like peanuts. You can't just have one. Welcome to the most addicting of sports. :)

depends on your budget. if you are only buying one right off of the bat, i would go non-restricted.

all three rifles that you listed would be good choices in my opinion. i would personally lean towards the cz or sks, due to the availability of cheap 7.62x39. i have an sks, its pretty fun and everybody that shoots it, enjoys it.

yeah, i had to just step back and say 'enough' a couple months ago. havent bought a new gun since.

im still pretty bad with buying ammo and gear though.

Thxs for the speedy reply. Fortunately my current interest is in 7.62 caliber military surplus style black rifle not handguns. I would love to have an automatic black rifle that fires more that 5 rounds, but beggars can't be choosy in Canuckistan, so I am prepared to live within the semi-automatic 5 round limit.

Time will tell. I am a licensed skydiver (having made over 1600 jumps which compared to the full time jumpers is not that many). Skydiving is pretty addictive. :dancingbanana:

My M4 chews up ammo like crazy so I am now just starting to do my own reloading. I too would like something in a 7.62mm but I am still trying to decide what. The really neat black rifles are usually restricted but a lot of fun. I would just go straight to your RPAL as you are bound to want a pistol or an AR type black rifle.

I think "weapons" is a carry over from a military background. Just not a good idea to use the term on a public forum as you may get Windy Wendy types crawling down our necks. I like the M4 personally because it is reliable and fun. It also accepts the LAR15 magazines so I can load up 10 shots at a time. I have put all 10 shots downrange in less than 5 seconds. Not bad for a semi-auto. IMHO

But "restricted" weapons can not be used on crown land? They can only be used at formal club clubs? Plus "restricted" weapons still need to be registered even if C68 goes through?

Fair enough ... I will try to refer to them as rifles from now on. Just don't ask me to refer to a possible future rifle of mine as a gun. I don't want my old drill sergeant coming back to haunt me.

True enough but I am not a hunter. Just a range shooter.

I am not interested in killing Bambi. So in that regard I am not a hunter either.
But gophers aren't animals are they? haha

I am sure if I get into this sport, I could have both. A "restricted" rifle for the ranges and a "non-restricted" for everything else. This way I can shoot the Feds with my "non-restricted" rifle after they have taken my "restricted" one away from me. Just kidding ... I am not serious. I didn't just say that did I?

Question: in order to obtain the RPAL, you do need to belong to a club before hand even if you are not planning on picking up a "restricted" rifle/gun anytime soon?

Take both safety courses. Apply for a PAL for both restricted and non-restricted and thereby keep your options open.

Then, being licensed for both classes, buy whatever you please.
