Just got my PAL back and bought a Tikka T3 LH rifle, looking at ranges in my area (Welland, Niagara Region) there seems to be only two outdoor rifle ranges where I can shoot this. One being Silverdale and another being Maple Leaf Marksman. I don't know anyone from the MLM club so I can't shoot there anytime soon. And Silverdale has their guest rifle range closed for repairs. I need to test fire this thing to look for any defects, one of my friends lives out in the country, would I be able to fire some rounds at his place?

Check local, municipal laws. As a rule, on private property or Crown land a certain distance from any road (400m??), you are good to go. Make sure of all backstops. But local law supercedes all so check or have your friend check them for his location.

In BC you have to be on crown land and 1km outside of city limits. I'm not sure what the regs are there but may be worth a look to see if you can do the same.

Check the municipal bylaws for your friends place. There may be a local bylaw for discharge of firearms. Often the areas closer to town are no discharge zones and further out of town you are fine. There may also be a land size restriction, e.g. no shooting on less than 25 acres of property.

Of course common sense like have a good backstop, don' shoot across roads, clear the area and be aware of neighbours, etc. should be used.

Municipal bylaws are what you need to look at. Thats it.

Barring a municipal bylaw there is no distance required from a building/road in Ontario for firearms discharge. On Crown it doesnt matter, just be off the traveled portion of the road.

where can i find more information on these backyard shooting laws? I have been looking but had trouble finding anyting.

They're not "backyard" anything. They're municipal by-laws. You can usually find 'em by search for 'hunting' or firearms discharge' on the municipality's web site. There is no central list of by-laws.
You also must comply with the Fish and Game Act. Usually dealt with by having targets and being exactly sure of what is behind your backstop out to several miles/kilometers.
There is no 400 meter rule in Ontario. All of that kind of stuff changes by Province.

thank you for yor reply. I will go off and see what I can find! I apprciate the tip on where to go looking. :)
