Non-toxic Shot

I have an older European OU shotgun with full & modified chokes. I have shot this gun for years and love the way it handles.

I have not been waterfouling since non toxic shot was made the law and I'm looking for information on the best shot to use with the chromed barrels. I have been told that Bismuth or one of the Tungstens would be the best bet.

Has any one had experience with this type of problem?
 
I have used IMPACT (tungsten-matrix) with my shotgun with fixed chokes. It worked very well. This season I bagged a duck a mallard at extreme range (50-55 yards).

You may also try Bismuth.

Don't fire steel shot from a full choke barrel.
 
Mysticbear, the advice you have been given is correct. The Kent shells (tungsten-matrix) or the Remington equivalent (tungsten-polymer)will shoot just like lead from your U/O. You cannot purchase loaded Bismuth ammo in Canada, but you can purchase raw Bismuth shot, so this is an option if you handload.

Note: be sure not to mistake tungsten matrix or polymer for tungsten iron. Tungsten iron is very hard shot and could damage your U/O.

Not true. Russell's sells Bismuth ammo. They didn't have what I was looking for (2.75 #2 and #4) when I was out at Christmas but who knows now.
 
my local gun shop also can get bismuth shells, as he shoots them when duck hunting and swears by them and he does not know how to reload....
 
This is (good) news to me (re:bismuth shells). When searching for soft non toxic loads for my 10 gauge last year (and not finding any), I called the Bismuth Cartridge Company. They explained that they were not exporting to Canada, had no export license and had no explosives branch clearance. All I have seen in Alberta are a couple of boxes of old shells left over from when they used to import the stuff.

Which brand of Bismuth shells are you guys are seeing? Bismuth Cartridge Company, Remington, or something else? If BCC, what colour is the box? When did you first start seeing the ammo on the shelf? Have you seen any 10 gauge? Thanks in advance for any responses.

I've been buying loaded Bismuth shells from SIR as well as Kent TM. You have to be careful though - some alternatives like HeviShot are actually harder then steel and will ruin them old guns.
 
OK..... while we are at it with this.............

What kind of fixed chokes are compatible with steel shot?
Where is the threshold?
What is the consequence of shooting steel where it's not advised?
 
Sharpie, Russells did import a huge order of Bismuth out of Texas I believe, don;t recall if they had any 10 gauge however.

Dave T73 if you saw Bismuth for 25.00 it was likely for a 10 pack not 20, and if it was for a 20 pack thats a helluva buy.
