I've seen non traditional advice lately - much of it in Clay Target Nation magazine. One example would be to stop leading and just let the bird push the barrel. (OK, not entirely new but....)

Topic of this post is suggestion to "Get over the gun". Standard advice is head erect - mount to the cheek before the shoulder and maybe 1 1/2 to 2 inches between your nose and lower knuckle of your thumb. (Think I may have posted about this one years ago.)

Getting 'over the gun'

I try these things - though maybe not long enough for a fair test. Bird pushing the barrel was - meh! Over top of the gun actually feels pretty good - like an aggressive confidence.

The broader question is whether you guys try the unconventional - or just stick to the basics? Got any to share?

Do you have a little more explanation on letting the bird push your barrel?

The article is two pages long in this month's target talk. If you can PM me your email, I'll forward it to you. The basic premise is that most discussions of lead inevitably get the shooter looking at either barrel or the gap - neither of which is deemed to be good. Talking about the bird pushing the barrel is supposed to result in better focus on the target.

I've read about the concept of letting the target push the barrels and I think it sounds good at least in concept if not in practice but I've never consciously tried to do it however, I have in fact done it many times. To use this lead successfully gun fit is paramount and you need to focus hard on the target then everything else falls into place but given the nature of sporting clays not every presentation will allow this concept to work well so you need to be articulate enough to figure out another way to work a particular station.
