Looking at getting my first shotgun but considering I am a complete noob I am hoping to get some suggestions from everyone here on what I should be looking at.

Realistically I think it will see skeet and trap use more then actual field use. I am looking for something more entery level, around the $500-$1000 is what i would like to speant.

I've got a Maverick 88 12 gauge, and it's reliable as hell. For trap, skeet, etc. you could match it up with a barrel from the Mossberg 500 series and appropriate choke tubes, etc. It won't look as pretty as the Brownings or Remingtons, but it will do the job seeing as the original gear will probably only put you back $250-300 max for the shotgun. Happy shooting!

like said before....what are YOU looking for?? 500-1000 gives you quite a few options. at least let the boys know if your after a pump, semi, o/u, sxs...the list goes on...

Sorry about that, I did originally have more to put in there.

I would like to get into a good o/u but from what I have seen i am looking at doubling the money I am able to spend. I have seen the Condor Combo that would give me the 12 and 20 for about $700-$800 but I am not sure on reliablity or quality.

My other option would be to go with a semi that way it is a little better suited for hunting. I imagine I will do mostly Clays with this gun tho but do still want to be able to hunt with it.

I hope that gives a little more information.

Do a search on this topic, there are already TONS of recommendations for what you wish to do. Make sure you also check out the Skeet/Trap/Sporting clay section as well.

I really like my benelli Nova, but a Remington 870 is a very popular first gun.

If you're shooting trap, no matter what kind you buy, get a long barrel with a vented rib.

I have been looking on here and see a lot of praise to Beretta 391 aswell. What are peoples thoughts on the Condor Combo? i havent seen much feedback on them as an entery level o/u

I would walk away from any cheap doubles. They are OK for light field use but for shooting clay targets most do not hold up. I shot about 4000 targets in the last year shooting trap, and that's not even half of what some of the guys I know shoot.

I use an 1970's vintage Rem 870TB (trap grade B) for now, hope to get a nice O/U / single as I improve. For now I think my money is better spent on instruction and ammo.

Skeet and trap are quite different games. If you want an all around gun, a semi with choke tubes is probably the way to go. You'll find yourself wanting a shorter barrel for skeet than trap, but for informal shooting I'd use a 28" barrel if I only had one gun.

Take Grouse's advise and do some research which can narrow things down, then head down to your local large gun shop that has lots of variety. And start handling them, one of them will speak to you.

PS But if it says your name, check your meds! ;)

All three of my pumps are amazing with skeet shooting. Surprisingly the $100 Mossberg 500 is the nicest to use. The Winchest Model 12 comes in a close second. And the Remington 870 brings up the rear.

lol, thanks for the input. I had never thought much about the pumps for Skeet just because of the doubles. I am slowly thinking i might be better off with a semi for now, something that i could then take hunting and save up for a higher end O/U. At least then it will serve a purpose and not turn into that "old gun i first bought and never use anymore".
