Hey guys ,

I just want to start off saying what a cool site this is , lots of great info , I am super new with the whole building a gun thing & I am really interested in building one of these cool looking tactical rifles out of a 10/22 . Where do I start ? can anyone give me a step by step as to what parts and suggest what kind of 10/22 I should buy to do such a project ? I was going to just buy a Remington 597 VTR and be done with it , but after reading a couple of threads on them I'm not sure I want to go that route , it looks like allot more fun building my own .

Thanks Guys

I'd try to decide what sort of barell you want. If you can buy one with the correct barrel already, you are ahead of the game. If not, then try to buy the cheapest 10/22 and budget on around $200 for an aftermarket barrel.

I'm new here, but have a 10/22 and was tempted to go "tactical"...but didn't. Why? It's hard to "reign-in" the mods once they start, or so I'm told. The end result isn't really a Ruger, since almost everything but the receiver gets replaced....and the real enthusiasts end-up doing that too! I got a killer deal on a 10/22 RB this year ($240 new in box, with metal trigger) and all I've added is a bolt buffer and a 2X mag. red dot sight. It needs an extended mag release (new ones have them I'm told) but that's probably going to be it.

I'd reexamine the VTR idea, I'm looking at them now myself!

Your best bet would be to get a basic stock 10/22 and get to know how it shoots as is. Once you've done that and are familiar with loading, shooting, stock trigger pull etc. go get yourself a high capacity magazine and take it from there. If you know the basic rifle you'll understand what upgrades are required and which ones are optional. You'll also appreciate what a difference a different hammer will make, auto bolt release (which requires a dremel and 10 minutes), as well as any other mods. Making it tacticool is a matter of aesthetics as to what stock you'd like, barrel, optics, accesories and so on.

Its important that you understand how the rifle operates and why everyone is so gung ho on certain upgrades. Also there is no end to the satisfaction you'll have taking apart your first trigger and doing your own upgrades. Tons of info on the forums if you have any questions and welcome to the board.

I wanted to do the same thing as you. But I think you'd be better off learning to shoot the 10/22 real well first THEN upgrade it. I also think you should up grade the insides first, ie. get an auto bolt release, tough buffer, new trigger/hammer, throw on a muzzle break cause they are cheap and look cool:) THEN buy yourself a ATI stock with a forgrip and get a few 25 round Bulter Creek mags as well.

10/22 upgrades

Re BC (Bultler Creek) 25 round mags, I prefer the steel lips over the hot lips (plastic) version, since they will last longer, perhaps indefinitely. Since you can see thru the smoke grey plastic to check # of rounds left, I prefer smoke grey to clear plastic finish: they look better. Avoid Walmart Federal 525 bulk pack ammo, doesn't feed or shoot in mine very well.

Re internal mods, if you don't mind the stock trigger pull, the first 2 mods I recommend is the tuffer buffer (about $5.00 shipped, direct from tuffer buffer) for a noticable improvement in cycling, and the Volquartson extractor (about 12.00 shipped from Hawktecharms) for elimination of the Failure to Feed/stove piping/Failure to eject issue common with the stock one extractor. It's just a bit tricky to change it.

At this point you have a nice shooting gun with lots of fire power. After that, a speed loader for the mags and another BC mag or two and you're ready for gopher season and lots of pop cans.
