Hi guys

Well I am enjoying my Lee kit day after day.

I am about to do my first 270wsm reload but I have some unanswered questions

1- is it normal that after one shot all my factory case need to be trim ?
I am getting a average of 2.108" when max length is 2.100" , how long will these brass last if they need to be resize everytime.

2- I have the LEE trimer tools that trim everything in a average of 2.093"
is that ok or it should be trim shorter ?

3- I am not sure how to seat the bullet , how deep it should be. I have Hornady 130GR SST bullets , what should be my C.O.L with this bullet ? Should I try crimp bullet if my reload are for hunthing (I have tendency to drop bullet when unloading in the woods) ? how exactly to I set up my lee die.

4- I was planning to use winchester LR mag primer with IMR 4350. Can I use Hornady SP load from my Hodgdon magazine with SST bullet ? I would start with the lowest load that is 58Gr

5- I did some dummy bullet seating (empty trimmed brass and bullet) for fun and I dont think this bullet can be seated lower then 2.775" this is probly to deep cause I can't see the crimp groove. I am pretty sure I need to see it cause I do on factory Nosler Partition Bullet.

Thanks

1. Yes, most 1F brass needs triming and its a good idea anyways to square up the mouth and chamfer the inside.

2. Trim length with the Lee guage works fine, no muss, no fuss.

3. a slight crimp is desireable on larger cartridges. Use the bullet seating stem to get the OAL you want and adjust the die height to get the crimp you want. This usually involves some trial and error

4. Load info for the same bullet weight AND length is good but do like you are and start low.

5. Most bullets are designed so the cannelure is right at the case mouth, if it needs to be seated deeper it will work but something is screwy, bullet might be designed for a different cartridge with a different seating depth.

Hope this helps:p

Thanks for the Answer

I have no ideal is SST and SP are the same Lenght , because I know the COL for the SP and there is no way I can seat SST bullet to get Hornady SP COL , which is way to low.

How come hornady dont provide these infos on there bullet box or website ?

I would really appreciate if someone could provide me Hornady info for 130Gr SST .270WSM with IMR 4350

Im starting to think I should have bought speer bullets

Thanks Again

First, 4350 should work out OK, but it is a fairly fast burning powder for the 270WSM case. Something slower burning like 4831 or even 7828 or Reloader 22 would probably be better. I assume you already have the 4350 - in which case, by all means, give it a go with that before you go spend more money. Just keep in mind that if you're not entirely happy with the results you get with the 4350, you might want to try a slower powder next time you buy a pound.

Second, pointy-tipped bullets like SST's, AccuBond's, etc, usually need to be seated to the full length listed COL of the cartridge (2.860 inches on a 270WSM, if I'm not mistaken). So, you're probably correct -- 2.775 is probably pretty deep. Hornady is pretty smart; somewhere around the crimp groove is probably about where you want to be.

Third; a 130 grain SST at 270WSM velocities probably isn't what you want to go hunting with. That bullet wasn't really designed for that kind of impact velocity.

Cheers!
