I've bought my first lever action, a Winchester/Miroku 1892 chambered in 44 mag. Now I know not to use pointy jacketed bullets and to only use flat points or hollow points. The bullets I use are flat point, but are a narrower flat plat point and I was wondering if these are okay in a tubular magazine, the flat point is just barely wider than a primer.

having not owned a lever gun before, i would feel fine about using that bullet. if you have other rounds that you know are safer to use in a tube mag, load a primed case first, then that cartridge, then the other rounds. fire off a bunch of rounds and see if the primer goes off, i doubt it will.
