noob with an M14

Thanks for the help all.

How picky do I have to be with cleaning it?
Is it a general wipedown with a cloth to get the cosmo out or (figuratively) power washing the crap out of it so that it's all bone dry before I lube it?

IMO you need the bore, chamber, gas cylinder, bolt internals spotless and free of cosmoline. The trigger group, op rod, receiver raceways need to be pretty clean and lubed as well or you're asking for trouble. That cosmo is like wax and it often contains grit and metal particles. Use a solvent.

SIMPLE GREEN EASY CLEAN AND SMELLS PRETTY TOO

Just spray it into the parts or let them soak for a bit then brush out with toothbrush. Entire job should take less than an hour with a rifle caked in cosmo

Home Depot, cheap and easy comes in a spray bottle. No you don't have to take the bolt apart, and I don't recommend that you do. Use the Simple Green or a solvent and let the bolt soak for a little while then you use the toothbrush to scrub into any open spots. If you use Simple Green you rinse with the hottest water that comes out of your tap and then lightly oil.

Leave the bolt assembled when you clean it. I like to use aerosol Brake Cleaner (any brand) from Ukrainian Tire. :D

Then come to my clinic or M14Doctor's clinic or else yer #### will fall off !

Just jokin'.....

But do attend a clinic, learn lots and then network with the most helpful people on the internet, found right here on this forum! ;)
