noobie question about getting a M4 rifle.

I am very interested in M4 SBR rifle but I have zero knowledge/experience with firearms of any kind. I would like to find out more about owning an semi-fire M4 SBR. Any info would be appreciated. Thanks.

1. I heard about PAL and restricted PAL. Am I correct I need to pass these two certificates first? What other certifications/licenses I would need in order to own a M4 style rifle?
2. What M4 brands/models are currently available for sale in Canada? (I like Noveske and Daniel Defense)
3. Any certified rifle instructors available in Toronto?
4. Is it possible to store my rifles in a gun club, instead of at my home? I am hoping to practice with my rifle only in a gun club.

1) Yes, you are correct. You also need an ATT so you can move your firearm from your home to your gun club.

2) There are a lot. Do some reading on this board, it will help with your research. Armalite, Stag, Bushmaster, Dlask, to name a verrry few.

3) Many. Do some reading here.

4) No. You must keep it at your residence in the manner which is outlined in our firearms laws. Sorry, your wife will have to agree to letting you have it in the house before you can own one.
 
ar-15/m4 rifles are restrcted yes you need to take both corses in order to get your RPAL.

you have a HUGE variety of rifles to choose from i will let others explain the ins and outs, but for you're 1st one i'd reccommend a Norc M4. it is the cheapest avaiable in canada and they function just fine, don't listen to the Norico haters out there.

there are lots of instructors everywhere. you can find on on here, or you can go to your local gun shop and they will be able to provide you with info as well.

i know of no clubs that allow you to store them on site, and and restricted firearm may only be legally discharged at an approved range.

You must be a member of a range in order to get an LTATT in order to trasport a restricted firearm.

The range membership is not law, but is policy and is a great thorn in our sides, but for the most part we just suck it up and deal with it.

I'm from alberta and policy on many things are different here. I'm sure a fellow ontatian will fill you in on your rules but i'll share the proccess i had here in AB.

1. Take RPAL course
2. Get licesne 3ish months later
3. go to local shop and buy gun, do transfer
4. 3 hours later call CFO and ask for my ATT
5. They e-mail it to me, I print it off and go pick up gun
6. go to range and blast away that afternoon


In Ontario i'm lead to beleive that the wait times are FAR longe than mine were. you're looking at weeks for your transfers and months for your LTATT. In ontario your gun club has to apply for your LTATT for you in AB. you just say gimme an att and they say here ya go.

Am I required to pay any yearly member fees/upkeep fees in order to keep my licenses/certifications valid?

I am thinking of getting the PAL and restricted PAL first, then get the ATT next year.

You would need to keep up your club membership fees since they are sponsoring your ATT. Currently there are not annual fees for maintaining or renewing your firearms license. There is no fee for an ATT, just delay :D

Yes, you have to get your RPAL before you can get an ATT. Length of your LTATT will vary depending on how the club sponsoring it requests it but it will expire when your RPAL does (every 5 years). At that time, when your RPAL is renewed, your club will have to re-apply for your RPAL (gang correct me if I am wrong here)

Also, the LTATT issued by the Ontario CFO is good for any approved range in Ontario. This does NOT include any DND ranges. Only civilian.
 
ATT is for transporting firearms from one location to another within Canada. What would I require for importing restricted firearms or firearm parts from US?

and most things are not on the US Export list meaning that it is illegal to export them. the general rule of thumb is that if it's under 100$ then it's ok, however ammunition is always a no no. 1 round can get you in trouble.


Generally canada doesn't care what you import so ling as you pay the duty on it, it's not FA or converted FA. the sates however have a giant list of what you CANNOT export. So while it may be legal to bring into canada it is illegal to bring it out of the states.... i know confusing....


just stick to the $100 rule and don't plan on getting too much from the states. Check out questar (dealer from the top of the page) they import firearms for people, there is info on their website about it and the GIANT cost of it. It's not really worth the time and money.

2. the best bet if for you to go to your local gun shop and ask them info on who is teaching a course.
3. yes, they will put on courses when they have enough students to make up a class i beleive around 10ish students is a full class.
4. there is no "exam center" when i took my monirs licesne it was held at a local community center, when i upgraded to my RPAl yearls alater it was held and the instructors wife's office. Basically it's whereever the instructor wants to hold the course.
