ok, soon i'll be starting to load for my 1898 Krag. i plan to use the Hornady 150 gr RN, only $20 per 100 and i'm stuck with RN's because of the Krags long throat. for a powder will probably use IMR 3031. my Lee lists this load as starting with 38.2 grains of powder, which produces a MV of 2473 FPS. the sights where originally designed for a 220 gr bullet fired from 30 inch tube, but my barrel's ben shortened to about 21 inches, and the front sight blade was cut down, was shooting way off with faciotry ammo, now it's on paper. i'm assuming that with a lighter bullet and shorter sight plane, it will be hitting high, the question is is there way to figure out how high?

Actually, lighter bullets often hit LOWER, because they're travelling so much faster and they're out of the tube before the lower recoil impulse begins to move the rifle much off the point of aim; the only way to be sure is to actually try a couple of shots.

at 25 yds the bullet might or might not have crossed the line of sight. wont tell you much.

once your load is worked up and you know the distance you want it zeroed at shoot at that distance, measure how much high or low it is, do the trigonometry on paper and adjust your sight accordingly. Make sure your gaurd screws are tight and your barrel has no wierd stock tension on it before you cut or add metal to you sights!

It might be an interesting exercise to try cast bullets, say the Lee 312185 .303 bullet to fill the throat. My Krag has done very well with an assortment of cast bullet loads. Try about 17 gr of 2400 or H110. If you don't already have sizing equipment, get a Lee sizer, probably .311 to size and affix the gas check, seat the bullet to the first driving band, then apply your choice of machine grease with your finger, seat to proper depth and wipe off the excess. Cheap, easier than it sounds, at least as good as most commercial bullet lubricants, and better than average odds that your driving bands will be sized concentric with the bullet body.

Hope you enjoy your Krag.
