So I have been considering building a black/green rifle. I understand the fact you build them in lowers and uppers.

But how do you build these freakn things? do you put the internals in yourself? how do you decide caliber? barrel length? where do you get all the parts and accessories from?

As you can tell I practically have 0 idea where to start. I have a ton of experience with firearms but 0 with these rifles.

I am pretty sure I want to build an AR.

If you have any resources to lead me to or advice please shoot it my way.

Thanks.

You can

-Buy a fully complete AR15 rifle and go shoot it.
-Buy the lower half of a rifle completed with all parts (just needs an upper to shoot)
-Buy an upper half of a rifle complete with all parts (just needs a lower to shoot)

Or buy a bagful of parts and build your own complete lower or upper. You will need lots of parts and some specialty tools. Generally to start off with you might benefit from just buy either a complete rifle or a lower and combine it with the upper of your choice.

There are tutorials on ar15.com
Can play with the ar15builder to get a feel for it, as well: http://www.ar15builder.com

You will see by reading these forums that most of the people having problems with their ARs have home built Franken guns. There is something to be said for a good factory built rifle with a warranty.

always wondered, if you build an AR from parts, how the heck do you register it? Upper will differ from lower? If you take one apart, which is still the registered part?

Cheers

I'd recomend starting by building the Lower (very straight forward, not much in the way of tools either). Since the upper is where all of the issues occur you can buy one pre-built and be good to go. As far as parts go, you need a stripped Lower, Lower Parts Kit, appropriate buffer/spring and receiver extension with stock.

Where would i get a lower kit from?

I agree, I see there are "repair" packages for about 75 dollars are these the correct ones to be looking at?

I have heard of stag, armalite and daniel defense before. Are these "good" name brands? Or are there better ones or are they all and the same playing field?

Dammit..... another hour of my life wasted fooling with AR stuff....:D

I just tried to out bubba my LMT MRP by building a "dream' FrankenAR.

I'd have to sell a nut.

For a first AR, I think you can't go wrong simply buying a decent Stag/RRA/LMT or mating a complete upper and lower.

Or better yet get a Norinco for $700 and one for your buddy.

I'm knee deep in AR bits and still think I'd have a hard time making a better shooter than what you can
currently find out of the box from dealers.

agreed, and with the number of ARs out there, custom or otherwise, its hard to have something really unique anyways. Pretty much everything has been done.

Avoid the head ache and get one off the the shelf, but get a good one.

Nope, you need the full LPK costs about $110-$120, I've used the Stag kit a few times and everythings been good

Yup, your on the right track! Plus you will need the buffer and buffer spring, some buttstock kits come with these. Good luck, and have fun. Welcome to the world of Adult Boys Lego!:D
