gansguns lists a whole bunch of compensators...
There are 4 kinds., screw on,press fit, solder and bushing replacement...
As Tiriaq mentions the bushing replacements really don't do a whole lot... Screw on you can do but you need a threaded barrel first the other 2 can be done by the individual but are better done my a competent smith like RK...
common ones are the 3, 4 and 5 port beats...
The problem with putting one on a 1911 is that you need a good barrel first... the 1911 really doesn't need a comp for 45 ammo... 38 super maybe... the comp has a tendency to really beat up the slide and the rails... Barrel links are another part that wears faster....
By your question I'm going to guess your new to all this...
