Hi all - I just noticed what seems to be some odd wear on the guide rod on my full size Norinco 1911. I'd appreciate any advice if you have any ideas.

This pistol has been modified from stock configuration: Among other irrelevant modifications, it currently has a 20lb recoil spring, Wilson shok-buff, and the guide rod is one that I cut down to standard length from the original full length guide rod.

It seems like something is causing the rounded tip of the guide rod to mar and develop quite a rough surface. I've polished it off a couple times now, but the roughness keeps reappearing. I don't notice any functional difference, but it's probably not a good thing to have roughness in that area. Here's what it looks like up close, but you can't see it so much as feel it:

When I installed it, the radius of this guide rod was perfectly polished with 600 grit. Now, there are rough edges on the 'bottom' (dust cover side) of the radius.

It seems like it is associated with some rubbing on the inside of the dust cover, and something a little funky with the recoil spring (see pics).

This just in...

I think I found what's causing the rough edges to develop:

See the peening that is showing on the bottom of the face of the guide rod spring plug portion of the slide (sorry, don't know the correct term)? That's gotta be it, right?

Okay, so my question has changed: Is my guide rod out of spec, so it is not aligned when the slide is moving backward? Maybe my uber cheap plan to save seven dollars by modding the FLGR wasn't the best idea...

Opinions?

well i would imagine its your recoil spring plug grinding against your cut down full length rod due to the fact your guide rod no longer sits in the plug like it was designed to do. What length did you cut it down to? might have to replace the plug with one that has a closed end. If you keep using it as is your run the risk of damaging the rod, plug or cracking your barrel bushing.

The plug shows no unusual wear (replaced the stock FLGR plug with one for the standard length guide rod), the peening is on that small portion of the slide.

It didn't occur to me that the base of the guide rods might be different, resulting in spring tracking problems - I just cut it down to standard (GI spec) length and radiused the tip. Looks like I'll just have to drop in an official production standard length guide rod (not just a bubba version ). Just one more reason why I prefer Norcs over Sigs!
