1 in 12 would be the common answer you will find. Mine doesn't stabilize 55g projectiles unless they are factory ammo or max charged reloads. I dicked around with it and pulled a very tight patch through many times and repeatedly came up with 1 in 14. That number also seems to make more sense according to the way it behaves with chronographed ammo. The 1 in 12 may come from the fact it is supposed to be an A1 clone which IIRC was 1 in 12. I load full power reloads for it and don't care now That and the fact it doesn't get fired anymore because I don't really know where I hid it last.
1 in 12. I've never had a problem stabalizing 55 grain ammo but then I only shoot factory loads. I used to love that Norinco 5.56 ammo (yellow box), it seemed to have more power but was dirty as hell and stung your nostrils for a while.
I believe the very first A1's had a 1 in 14 twist, that was changed to 1-12 to better stabilize the 55 grn round in high humidity, or other adverse balistic conditions. They may have copied that. Just a guess
Mine would feed any 55gr with no problems,i even tried some 62gr.But i was only shooting at 100m,longer than that and i think you run into tumbling issues.
I would not recommend using hollow points. They have been known to catch and get driven deeper into the case causing pressure spikes and a few explosions.
Couldn't handle it any longer, dug out the Norc 311 and measured the twist.
Flattened out a brass pull through loop and filed it flat and squared so it fit barely between the lands and could not slip. Definately 1 in 12.
