Just a quick question; I have a Norc Commander and I was wondering if it can handle or is rated for +P or greater loads? I've thought about loading some for fun but don't want a bad experiance.

Thanks,
Ace

I believe all .45 acp loads have to be within SAAMI specs IF loaded by a commercial manufacturer. There ARE hotter loads for specialized custom barrels. Follow a reliable reloader's manual and you should be OK.

For .45 acp this means a MAX PROOF pressure of 33,000 PSI.
+P loads using a 185 or 230 Gr jacketed bullets is 23,000 PSI on Average

If you want to whole ball of wax, go here:

It will handle commercially available +P no problem. As for greater, that's a difficult question to answer. Consult your reloading manual to see how much more of an oomph you want to give your 45.
Dont worry about the norc though, it will handle anything other 45's will.

The Norinco is probably as good as any other 1911a1 regular or commander.
Just remember though that is has a regular barrel & therefore part of the brass is unsupported at the bottom of the chamber.
Loads that are by the book should be fine in your gun , just don't push it over the limit.
I use 45 super brass for hot loads as they have a thicker, stronger brass at the base. Regular 45 brass is thinner & if pushed, will let go.

Your Norinco 1911 style pistol is very strong. Gunnar at Armco likes them to build bear defense guns using his .45-08 Armco cartridge.

The weak point using .45ACP in a standard 1911 barrel is the base of the unsupported case. The .45-08 Armco uses modified 7.62X51 cases for the additional case thickness and strength.

Hot-loading .45ACP cases and possibly causing a KABOOM, would surely ruin your day.;)

Thanks for the input guys! I will stay within the guidelines of the books as I'm new to all this so that's the safest way to go.

Just as a side note; I'm not real familiar with the differences between a supported and unsupported chamber. If someone could provide a brief 'idiots guide' on the topic it would be appreciated. Can you get a fully supported 1911 barrel? Also what are the advantages/ disadvantages of the design.

This should clear it up for you.

+P loads will accelerate the wear on any pistol.... that includes the Norcs despite being very well made & all steel.....
