I just got my first AR and I'm looking to replace the ejection port cover with something more fun, maybe engraved with "zombie killer" or whatever.

I can't seem to remove the forward quad rail as it's all been painted and welded together. Am I missing something or is this something that can't be done on the norcs.

There's no c-clip on the ejection port rod on there now, so I can't just remove it the more convenient way.

If you have never installed a dust cover before, you won't appreciate what a pain in the ass it can be to get that spring wound twice and pin through it.....
I will only do it when I absolutely have to....if the spring breaks, or I'm building on a stripped upper....just not worth the effort to take the gun apart if it's working fine.
Especially if you have one with the FF rails on it and have to remove the FSB to remove the barrel.....so not worth it lol

The Norc pin is enlarged at front end towards muzzle so it can only actually move forwards. No c clamp as you indicated. I purchased a replacement cover AFTER discovering that and it would mean removing the barrel nut so it would slide forward...I think I will just hold onto it for next AR!

Thanks for the replys everyone, very appreciated.

I think I'll hold off until I buy something else. For now my shooty stick is working great just the way it is and if it's that hard to deal with, well, I've been warned.

I have a way to replace the dust cover on a norc without too much work. Most complicated part was removing the gas tube, so it was pretty easy. Unfortunately I did not take pics.
My stock dust cover was crap and did not stay shut, so I found one by Phase 5 Tactical that has the festive greeting of "SURPRISE A$$HOLE! printed on it.
-prove rifle safe
-remove bolt
-pull back delta ring and remove hand guard
-remove gas tube pin from sight post, push back gas tube turn sideways and pull forward to remove tube
-see the weld spring behind the delta ring. It is cut straight though so that the gas tube can pass. Take a small flat screwdriver and turn that spring so the cut lines up with the pin that holds on the dust cover.
-slide pin forward through the cut
- you can now pull the dust cover away far enough to slide it off of the pin, careful to not lose the cover spring
-slide on new cover and cover spring, put pin back in place and reassemble the rifle

Not the clearest explanation but you can figure it out. Hammer, small flat screwdriver, 1/16" pin punch, wood block. Any process you are unsure of just look up on you tube. There is a vid showing how to pull back the delta ring using the rubber coated handles on a large set of channel locks that is pretty cool.

I did mine in about 30 minutes on my kitchen floor. Spent most of my time fooling with springs.
