Hi everyone,
Decided to refinish my usgi syn stock this weekend and while trying to just even out the bedding area and take all the channels out of the top where the reciever sits I noticed how off centered my gas piston was while using the reciever as a mold so to speak. The hole seems to be drilled or reamed way off center. Im not talking about the little gas escape hole, but the hole the piston goes in. PLEASE TELL ME THIS IS NORMAL !!!!!..............Oh and while I'm askin. Can you bed fairly close to the reciever so as the gap that supposed to be there is closed a little so I cant see thru the underside of receiver. I know the heel or horseshoe needs to sit but then maybe an inch up theres a little down slope and the gap begins. Can I fill it in a bit and or is it suppose to touch near the front of receiver also. I did read allot about this but just cant risk it and I dont want to cause a malfunction. BUt if this Gas cylinder hole isnt supposed to be missalligned then I'm deffinately gona look at an LRB or somethin cuz my Norc to do list is exceeding new LRB m14 price. Hope I'm freakin for nothin

All the parts that didn't pass quality inspection the first or second time around are now being put on new firearms from norinco. You will be hard pressed to find a new norinco that doesn't have a few scrap parts on it.

If you purchased from Marstar, you have a warranty.

As for the syn stock, you can fill in with epoxy any excessive gap to improve the cosmetics. I am told though, that a small gap should remain for approx an inch ahead of the heel of the receiver. Forward of that, bed the rails.

See my thread on bedding for an example of how to bed the surface and get some barrel tension.

I'm happy with my Marstar 2007 m14. The quality seems good, it shoots perfectly. The most common issue is barrel indexing wasn't too precise at the factory assembly. Otherwise, generally good guns.

Honestly, don't sweat it. First with the plain simple. The stock doesn't need to be filled to removed the receiver to stock gap provided that the rear heal is properly touching. Can it be done, sure, just don't worry if you don't....if it is a USGI FG stock, don't bother.

The off-center cylinder hole is normal. Normal as in, it won't affect usage one bit. Provided that the piston still properly works the oprod back, you are good to go.

I'm hoping you're just an FNG who can't type his humor very well, as opposed to an FNG who has an attitude and doesn't know what he's talking about and has a big mouth.

You can't use a USGI gas assembly on a Norinco barrel.

This statement is wrong, I have built/modified more M14 types than average amoung people on this board. I have used GI systems on Norcs.....and Norc systems on GI barrels.

A GI system works fine on a Norc, you will have to re-use the gas lock, but putting a GI cylinder/piston/plug on the norc is 1000% compatible

Send me 5 pieces of fired brass in a padded envelope and I'll 'mic' the brass cases to help you determine your headspace or chamber size. Most of the Norcs are around 10 thou over, nothing to worry about!! Just neck size your match handloads!!

Send me a PM if you want your brass mic'ed....

Peace be to journey,

Barney

Thanks for the correction. So the splines and diameters are fully compatible I take it. Good to know. Too much assumption on my part in that most guys swapping barrels seemed to be buying USGI gas assemblies as well.

Right on i'm so glad I can swap out the gas cylinder for a usgi. I dont mind a stock norc but if something is unfixable that really gets to me because I wanna work on these rifles and strive for reliability and accuracy. thanks again everyone!
