It's not the distance the spring is unsupported, it's the fact that the spring rides the rod in a straight line to compression, then straight line decompress. Without the rod, the spring can 'flop' any way it wants within the confines of the space available in the gun, giving inconsistent action.
As a battle sidearm it's good enough for what it's designed for, which isn't bullseye accuracy. The FLGR just improves your target capabilities.
