I want to get into IPSC-style action shooting on a budget. I saw a competion recently where each shooter had at least 4, 10-round mags. It seems that the Norinco, $325 plus $9.95 per mag would be a good choice with 5 extra mags. Comments please!

You wouldn't want the 7 round magz for ipsc, trust me. And you wouldn't want a .45 for ipsc also, if you are really on a budget. You are better off with a 9mm the Chinese military maybe. Ammo cost is way cheaper. Or a CZ in 9mm.

If you want a 45, go with a 45. When you start out, it will not hold you back anyway. As for mags, use the one included with the gun as a stripper, and buy Chip McCormick mags for the rest of them.

If you want to get into ipsc style shooting on a budget then I agree with Gasanwu and stay away from 45. Ammo is significantly more expensive unless you reload. If you reload, the difference is neglegible if you save the expensive 45 brass. With a 1911 you will be in standard division because it has a single action trigger. I would not worry too much about power factor until you are one of the top shooters. By then you will probably want to upgrade your pistol anyway.

Check out this thread which I started, http://www.canadiangunnutz.com/forum/showthread.php?t=64171
many experienced ipsc shooters warn against shooting .45 because even if you reload the loss of brass in matches mounts up to significant cost. I got a Norc 1911A1 Govn't all suped up, got the tungsten guide rod, SS commander hammer, SS slide stop, SS grip safety, SS main spring housing and magwell, SS extended mag release botton, and 5 10 round Wilson magz, before I found out about the cost associated with shooting .45. Now it's just a fun plinker. It's accurate as any factory gun, btw.

And what about power factor? Production is where you should start, and there's no power factor issue there. Most people shoot 9mm in production anyway, some have down-loaded .40 but if you don't plan on reloading soon, 9mm is the way to start off with.
