I about to make my first restricted purchase and its going to be a Norinco 1911 knock off. I'm a little unsure if I should buy a single or double stack. What are the advantages or disadvantages of each? What are your prefrences? Are accessories more for a double stack?

Get the single stack. No doubt about it. Mags are plentiful and cheap. Mags for the DS one are NOT. I don't even know if commercial non-norinco mags can be made to fit.

If you want a quality double stack 1911, look at a ParaOrdnance.

Especially for your first gun, the single stack Norinco is the best value going. As mentioned, you might want to contact Gunnar at Armco, as he sells 'cleaned up' versions with better componants and a trigger job. VERY worth while!

Also, if it's your first handgun, consider a Norinco NP29 (if you can find one). It's a 9mm 1911, and has extended safety, slide lock and a beavertail saftey. VERY good value for the price.

The 1911 in .45 and the NP29 were my first two handguns. I've since upgraded, but it is an awesome place to start!

Single stack Norc 1911 is the way to go!

Single stack 1911A-1 in .45ACP +/or 9mm is the way to go. Heck go for it & get one of each! Way more accessories for single stack 1911's. The sky's the limit!

Also, if you buy other than from Armco consider sending it to them for a "tune" it will be well worth the money, too. ;)

If you are starting out pistol shooting, then go for the 9mm version. If you are going to shoot .45acp, then you better invest into a reloader.

+2 on Armco

The hi-cap .45; what type of mag does it take? Is it similar to a Para mag? Never got to handle one of the double stack guns before, been curious about them actually. Have Armscor double stacks made into Canada? From what I have read they would be a decent value. would like to see some detailed pics of a double stack Norino and the mags to get a good look at it. Are the frames forged?

I believe that the mag in the double-stack Norky's are proprietary, crappy, and expensive. The single stack, on the other hand, takes plain ole 1911 mags.

I have a Norinco NP-30 double-stack pistol.
The magazines are indeed proprietary, However my three mags are well made and function perfectly.
As for price, Marstar sells them for $35.00 each, and that's acceptable to me.:)
The single stack gun also has better parts interchangeabilty with standard 1911 types.
Fortunately for me, I have some of each. :dancingbanana:

Armscorp single stacks have......sold as Tanfoglio's out of Freedom Ventures.

You just have to relieve and and slightly blend the mag well. Only a couple thou need to be taken out. Trust me it works. I hogged out an NP-28 (9mm) to fit a Caspian mag, and converted it into a 38Super race gun.

I would go with the Nork single stack. Even though its made in China, its still old skool! Besides, you can always get ten round single stack mags that are super reliable to feed your nork's habit!

I really enjoy the clasic look and feel of the single stack.
and seeing as we cant get over 10rnd mags in canada any way, your not that out classed by a double stack, plus you can always get the 10rdn extended mags.
there are also more grip options (at least to my knowlage)
also the availability of mags that has already been said.
what ever norinco you get, send it to armco to get it tuned. its a world of diference and Gunnar really knows his stuff.

Thanks for all the replies.

So I ordered the Norc single stack in 45acp from Marstar. Should be here in 2-3 weeks. I debated getting one from Armco, all ready tuned. However that is something I'd like to try myself. I figure there is enough knowledge on this board that I'll never be too far away from an answer to a question.

Well, the important thing is that you took the plunge & ordered one nevertheless...

I'm still a little intrested in the double stack .
seeing the Caspian mags can fit with a little modification , What about trigger components ?
Thanks

Caspian mags

A little more info on the double stack mag question:

Yes, the closest (and only as far as I can find out - and I 've tried LOTS of mags in the wide body Norks) is the Caspian. Now, of course, this is very much jumping from the frying pan into the fire :) The Caspian 10 rounders are not nearly as good a mag as the Norinco ones! They have come out with a few mods to block them, and I am unimpressed with any of them. I have built many guns on Caspian frames (not the wide body, usually :), I use their components faithfully as I love their workmanship and consistent quality, but I just don't like their hiCap mags.

I am doing quite the opposite right now - building a Custom 1911 on a widebody Caspian chassis - using Norinco mags. Better made, more reliable... and only minor mods to make them work. I'll keep you posted :)

Hmmm

I have a Caspian alloy match trigger here that seems to work great in a wide body Nork. More later :)
