Are these handguns any good? How well do they perform compared to say a Beretta 92FS or 96FS?
mr00jimbo, you just sold me one!1911s are completely different animals compared to a modern 9mm or .40 sized gun. You can 'hot rod' a 1911 any way you want, the possibilities are endless.
The Norinco 1911 is said to be a good buy for a custom build. They have forged frames, which is a feature more reserved for 1911s in the higher price category (the machinery and labour costs in China are lower to allow for this).

will you be doing a combo with the gov models and case of ammo?
They are good value but don't expect a $1000 pistol for $400. What I mean is that they are functional but fit and finish details leave some to be desired. For instance, mine had significant machining burrs that I had to file and polish off. The safety and slide stop levers are uncomfortably angular rather than rounded off. Mine had an 8 lb trigger pull so I replaced the main spring. Initially I had a couple failures to feed so I polished the feed ramp and that seems to have solved the problem. On the plus side, it functions perfectly now and the mags have worked flawlessly (that was a problem earlier on, apparently). I think the bottom line is that you have to accept that they will need a bit of tweeking and be willing and able to do it.
Allthough this is true. When did you purchase your gun? I have heard they have gotten a lot better then they used to be. Going from how you described a poor finish to a moderate finish. Yes tweaking will be involved and some cleaning up but nothing to what it used to be.
