they are the same in the spam cans or the yellow box ... if you prepare for the zombies apocalypse , go whit the spam cans , they will be good almost forever , if you plan to shoot them in the next year or 2 go whit the yellow box , easier to carry ect ...

I think it's irrelevant if they are stored one way or another for long term storage. They've been sitting in either spam can or cardboard box for almost 9-10 years and near as I can tell, they still go boom when you pull the trigger.
For convenience, I think the yellow boxes are the way to go.
Think of a spam can as a non reusable ammo can, keeps your ammo free of moisture transgression so its good forever in the worst conditions. Ammo without protection can corrode which compromises its reliability.
