Norinco .223 Remington Yellow Box

I bought a case of Norinco .223 Remington Yellow box about 10 years ago and just fired some yesterday across my Chronograph, 55gr were travelling between 3480 - 3555 fps. I tried some of my 55gr reloads, I made them a little hotter than the Nosler book had show for max, but I had worked the load up over time, shows no pressure signs and my rifle loves them for accuracy, they were going across the chrongraph at 3180 - 3240. I can't believe how hot those Norinco are loaded, anyone else had any experience with the Norinco's
 
Yes, they were indeed crazy hot. I never had pressure problems either and I went through truckloads of them back when they were readily available. Wish we could source them once again.
 
How long is your barrel? The stuff is certainly hot but 3500 fps doesn't sound right. Across several lots I found velocity to sit around 3200 fps from 18-20" barrels..
 
IMHO that Norinco ammo was the buy of the century when Canada Ammo offered it at the initial discount.

It is reloadable and the brass is consistent other than you really need to be careful with the flash holes being off center.

I broke down a couple of boxes to weigh the components. The brass was all within 2/10 of a grain in weight, the bullets were about the same but the real surprise was the powder. It was a ball powder that weighed an average of 25.4 grains. The weights I measured were all within +- 1/10 grain. It was very accurate in the four different match grade rifles I shot it in. Rem 700, Anchutz, Winchester and CZ.

It did create some problems in a Mini 14. The powder burns very dirty. I also found one round with a relatively loose bullet which jammed in the lead. Other than that, it's to bad no more is coming in. It was cheaper than I could hand load for and my bolt action rifles liked it. Tomorrow I will be taking what I have left to shoot out of a Tikka T3. I have no doubt it will shoot well.
 
Curious, what is your guys desired price per round for .223 surplus? Please give a price, don't just say, "Whatever is the cheapest". I'd like to get a feel for what a standard price is these days.

Dunno where to buy anymore Norinco .223 surplus but I'd probably pay somewhere between $0.30 and $0.40/rnd with taxes. Otherwise I'm better waiting for a sale somewhere and picking up some PMC for $0.50/rnd

The last norinco stuff I bought was $.25/round taxes in. 30-40/round would be reasonable these days.

Norinco was the best shooting factory ammo in 2 rifles I've owned. It was only compared to Winchester white box and Remington yellow box bulk stuff, though.
 
nice to hear the ammo is so good as i have two crates that i've been sitting on for some time.... wish i would have bought more at the time.:)
 
That's the thing about cheap ammo, you snooze you lose.

When Canam first brought it in,you could buy 4 cases for the price of 3. I don't remember but I believe it was around $129 per 1600 round case and if you ordered his 4 case special, shipping was included in the price.
 
yea, the yellow box stuff is hot, no question. also reasonably accurate, easily reloadable, and generally decent ammo. Except that its dirty as hell.

now, be careful as there is also Norinco WHITE box ammo. There are a few different batches out there. I forget the numbers that are the bad batches, but there are some that have undersized bullets that cause keyholing. If you are thinking of getting some, take a calipers and check for .223 diameter.
