Dear listmates,

I would like to go and shoot a black bear next month.

I presently restrict my built weight to 150 grain out of concern for the gas system. I wold like to go bigger.

I know that I can turn the gas system off, but would prefer to keep the semi-automatic action when I am hunting bear.

I do not know what "damage to the gas system" would look like, so anyone with more experience in this area, I would appreciate your input.

Thank you,

Paul

The maximum recomend vbullet weight is 168 grs.

Heavier bullets tend to be hard on the gas system, op rod, or glass bedding.

You can end up bending or breaking your op rod (especially the welded 2 piece op rods), mushrooming the end of the gas piston, and loosening/crack you glass bedding.

The U.S. Army & Marines use up to 190 grs. bullets, but they rebuild & rebed their M14s every season, plus they have a nice Armorers van that travellers with the rifle teams with LOTS of spare parts.

The occasional 180 gr. hunting rounds will be ok, but a steady diet of heavy bullets will take it's toll of the rifle.

SKBY.
